RAB idea: 2019 Andujar as 4 corners guy

RiverAveBlues (specifically Mike) has been pushing this idea a lot lately.  Bring in a better defensive 3B (Machado?) and transition Andujar into a 4-corners/DH utility guy who gets regular at bats.

What are your thoughts on this?

If the last season was not an aberration for free agents and Manny is looking for a $300+ mil contract, I don't see the Yankees being in on him.

Andujar's bat looks like something special.  Moving him around to a diferent position every night seems like a good way to screw that up.

agree. andujar's rookie season is better than machado's and i have a feeling he can develop into almost as good a hitter as manny so why spend the $300 mil. while he may never be a gold glove, i'm sure they can improve his fielding.

No Machado, please!  It should be painfully apparent now that Cashman has got to focus on pitching, pitching and pitching.  Andujar has defensive flaws, but I'm with you on the prospects of his improvement in the field.

So they suggest taking our best hitter and mess with what is working? SO what if he isn't a a gold glve defensive player, they want to spend 300 million on a pain in the asz to replace a great hitter and great teammate? Yeah, good idea. No thank you.

"Not a gold glover defensive player" is a pretty big understatement.  He's a pretty big negative on defense and his play costs us runs there.  Could he improve?  Maybe...  but he has a pretty huge gap to fill.

Machado or no Machado, I don't think adding a player who can improve the defense at 3B should be off the table in the offseason.  You guys say pitching, pitching, pitching but improving the defense improves the pitching without spending a dime on it.

Not when balls are leaving the yard and rattling off the walls. That's all on the pitcher.

I agree he is under average, how's that? Howver the Yankees wasted months, actually years waiting for Bird to hit, NAda.  Sanchez can't catch that's OK? Of course not, but to go after Machado and mess with Andujar just isn't sensible.  We would be better off letting Arod or Cal Ripken work with him over the winter and see if after that see what they think he can become as a defesnive third baseman. I mean if he played other places and they wind up making him a thirdbaseman, that must have some merit, I would imagine?

Improving the team defense 100% improves pitching even if the pitcher gives up a HR or a double.  Andujar makes most of the routine plays, but he has poor range and poor instincts at the position which result in a lot of plays that would be routine for a better 3B going for a non-error "single" that could have easily been prevented.

The "ball leaving the yard" becomes a 2-run homer instead of a solo shot.  The "ball rattling off the wall" turns into a run scoring double instead of just a runner at second.  These things impact the pitcher, require more pitches be made, etc.

Tanaka, Happ, CC...  they've all been decent pitchers this year.  If you improve the defense a little behind them, their overall results will look better - even if it is only incrementally.

I say work on Andujar's mechanics in the field, and he will improve to where he can be a serviceable 3B. His bat is great. Stay away from Machado and spend that money on starting pitching, which is the Yankees biggest need by far. The last thing they need is another right handed bat.
