That is the current rumbling.

I like the acquisition, but seems he'd have to start at 2B which means Gleyber moves to SS. If Tulo stays with the team that makes him the UT IF. He can play all IF positions and, considering his injury history, maybe that'd be for the best. Of course, it's a long way to opening day.

The question becomes...what happens when Didi returns?

They prob drop Tulo unless it's he's Mr 2011 again

Maybe...but then you've got Andujar / Didi / Gleyber / LaMahieu. Seems like something's gotta give, unless Yanks are in fact willing to spend $12M on a UT IF.

He has played virtually his entire career at second base. Out of 892 games, he has played less than 6% of those at a position other than second. Unclear then how the Yankees would consider him some super utility man.

And for $12m bucks, it sounds like he will be the starting 2nd sacker until Didi returns.

That isn't what Jack Curry is saying.  He's going to be the utility infielder.  He'll probably get more PA than most utility IF do, but that is going to be his role.

And Neil Walker had primarily played 2B in his career too...  until he came here and played 1B, 2B, 3B and RF.  You guys are overrating the lack of experience at other positions.  He's a good defender.  He'll get experience by playing those positions this year.

Yes, they did that with Walker, and it was hardly optimal to say the least. That was during the season, out of necessity.

I'm not disputing LeMathieu being a good defender. But being good at one position hardly means he will be good at any position. My puzzlement is how he is considered a utility player.

Of his career of over 7,000 innings, he has played a total of 4 innings at SS, 13 at 1b, and 244 at 3b. The last time he played any of those positions was in 2014. He seems a solid player overall. But if I wanted a true utilityman, he isn't the player I would have signed, especially for $12m per guaranteed.

LeMahieu is entering the market at age-30 and has rated well defensively at an important position. There’s reason to believe his bat is better than some metrics show.

VERY interesting. Really like him...question is how does the IF shape up now?

Sounds like the Yankees are moving away from Machado. It also makes me think that the Yankees have a trade already in place for Andujar.

It sound like Andujar is not going anywhere unless they found another 3B...Yankees employing LeMahieu  as a utility player

It's not like Walker was some kind of disaster at 1B or 3B.  He was ok.  And he's a player who was never really fantastic at 2B to begin with.  LeMahieu is a much better 2B and has more experience going in at the corners than Walker did.  I'm not that worried about his defense at those spots.

I suppose the Yankees don't have a problem with a $12 M utility guy when their starting 2B and 3B make a combined $1 M.

In ST, I think they'll look hard at Andujar's improvement (if any) after his working w/ Beltre, A-Rod, and who knows who else in this off season. If Andujar stil seems too much of a negative at 3B, then, since Machado and Harper seem out of the picture right now, they'll probably shift Andujar to LF and let him work w/ Gardner as his mentor/coach/substitute--Andujar is too good a bat to leave out of the lineup. LeMahieu would then man 3B, Torres stays at 2B, Tulu at SS until Didi returns. Then maybe a midseason trade.

But think of it: if Bird is still wandering around in offensive birdland (up two weeks, down the other month's two weeks) and Voit's the real hitting deal, then we'll have an infield and outfield mostly comprised of RH bats. We aka Cashman should've gone after a LH outfielder, I think (e.g., maybe a Brantley before Houston nabbed him), of which we have a glaring dearth (having traded away Cave & McKinney most recently) in our minor league system. And please don't mention Florial unless he hits far better than he did this past year at Tampa and then the AZ league.

You know how a lot of people kept talking about how the Red Sox play great defense and don't strike out a lot and move the runners over and all that fun stuff...?  Meet DJ LeMahieu.

Indeed a big discrepancy as it normally is with rookies...

As reported....

DJ LeMahieu was originally drafted into the cubs organization when current yankees exec Jim Hendry was cubs gm

So since this likely takes them out on Machado and Harper never really seemed like an option, I hope the semi-operational death start turns its focus towards bringing in Ottavino.
