Clint Frazier boosts trade value as scouts linger over Yankees’ win

BALTIMORE — With the Giants and Pirates having scouts at Camden Yards on Tuesday night, Clint Frazier could not have picked a better time to display his right-handed power in front of clubs who could provide a starting job for him.

The going-nowhere Giants are getting calls about lefty starter Madison Bumgarner and their outfield is a mess. The Pirates, who started Tuesday night’s action in the NL Central hunt, talked to the Yankees two years ago about Frazier before they traded Gerrit Cole to the Astros prior to last season.

With his path to regular playing time in The Bronx blocked by Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and in the not-so-distant future when Estevan Florial surfaces in the big leagues and either takes over center field or moves to a corner, Frazier’s highest value to the Yankees might be as a trade chip.

The scouts had to like what they saw when Frazier crushed two home runs to center field that helped the Yankees to an easy 11-4 victory over the laughable Orioles in front of an announced crowd of 17,389.

Frazier, who started the game in a 6-for-40 (.150) slump, hit a two-run homer in the three-run third off David Hess that upped the Yankees’ lead to 6-0. His three-run blast in the fifth, also off Hess, made it 9-0 and set a career high in RBIs with five.

“I felt I was in between pitches the last couple of weeks,’’ said Frazier, who was on the injured list April 24-May 5 with a left ankle problem.

Aaron Boone didn’t start Frazier on Monday night after he wasn’t in the starting lineup Saturday, but the manager said before Monday night’s game he believed Frazier was getting close.

“I felt close at times and I felt far away at other times,’’ said Frazier, who hiked his home run total to eight. “People lose track of how hard this game is, especially coming off the [IL] and trying to get back to playing the way you want.’’

Frazier wasn’t the only Yankee taking advantage of Hess’s ill-located pitches. After slugging a game-winning home run and driving in four runs in Monday night’s victory, Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the first inning that set the stage for the easy victory. Sanchez traded a ground out for a fourth RBI in the sixth.

German didn’t allow a run through four and left the bases loaded in the third. However, he hit Hanser Alberto to start the fifth, threw away a potential double-play ball at second and gave up a three-run homer to Stevie Wilkerson that reduced the lead to 9-3.

With the six-run advantage, Boone summoned David Hale and the right-hander gave up one run in the final four innings for his first major league save.

“I felt pretty good out there, I felt my pitches were close to perfect,’’ said German, whose pitch count reached 58 thanks to a lengthy third inning. “There were two innings where I battled and at the end I was able to battle and get through five innings.’’

The Yankees’ seventh win in the past eight games improved their record to 30-17, and moved them two lengths ahead of the second-place Rays in the AL East. They lead the third-place Red Sox by 5 ½ games.

It was the Yankees’ seventh consecutive win over the brutal Orioles, against whom they are 8-2 this season. The only bad news for the Yankees, who have hit 20 homers in five games at Camden Yards, is they don’t see the O’s rag-tag pitching staff again until Aug. 5.

By then the Yankees could use Frazier as a path to get what they need as the summer plays out toward the July 31 trade deadline.

If they trade Frazier they will regret it for years to come. This kid is special!

This is Gardner’s last season.  Why trade Frazier?

Let's not trade him for some aging star for the short term like a Bumgardner or Chris Archer. We need to get a package of top rated prospects like what Tampa got for Archer.

With all those players coming back, we know a major deal will be in the works, Cashman has no choice. Stanton, Hicks, Judge, Frazier, Gardner makes for a crowded outfield. The Infield is about to get crowded with DD coming back and Bird is still on the team.

I would trade Stanton. Do the Mets want him?

The question  is does Stanton  want the Mets? Also, short   term he's  destined  to be a full time DH so a national league  team wouldn't  be a good fit.

With all the injuries on this team they may want to hang onto Frazier... but I wouldn't be opposed to trading him for a top starting pitcher.

I don't  think Frazier alone brings a top starting pitcher, he would have to be part of a package with  other top prospects . I'd  rather they keep him than give up the potential  he has.

exactly. in 120 plate appearances, he has 8 HR 23 RBI and that's after getting off to a slow start and being injured. while his defense leaves a lot to be desired, think he can be a very good, possibly great offensive player. unless we can get a top of the rotation pitcher, think it's a trade we'd regret.
