If Cashman has a plan to improve the team, now's the time. Looking at the schedule, things are going to be tough for the next few weeks.

  • home for 4 vs Rays
  • home for 3 vs Rockies
  • @ Twins for 3
  • @ Red Sox for 4
  • day off
  • home for 2 vs DBacks
  • day off
  • home for 4 vs Red Sox

So far we've done well against the AL East, we knew we'd have to play them, that's a given... Twins on the road will be a tough series, especially with them playing really well this year... If we can't take care of business and win those series against the Rockies and D. Backs it's our fault ?? The four games coming next week against the Rays could set the tone for the second half, we have to beat them in our own park.. I'd much rather be in our situation than there's....

We all know where the need is. They can´t just wait to see if Sevy can return, whether he does or not a starter is needed.  Betances is a reliever and I am sure he will be able to return soon and ease his way back to set up man, but Sevy is a starter and he has struggled on the post season.

If Betances comes back that's like getting team fixing trade at the deadline... I think with Betances Boone might use the opener more often and it might be as good as picking up a top starter, especially if he's only a rental ??

I know everyone will hate this idea but I think the Yankees can afford to be cautious.  If a sweetheart deal falls in our laps pull the trigger but if they don't they could get by utilitizing openers.  I even would consider utilizing it for the postseason.  It would take about 6 weeks for Severino to return as a starter but if the Yankees were to rehab him as an opener he could be on the same schedule as Betances.  We could have them both back within a month.  Tanaka, German, Paxton, Sabathia, and Happ.  Any of them could benefit from an opener and pitching the bulk.  It would have no effect on them being the pitcher of record and would shorten the games dramatically for the opponents.  Paxton has struggled in the first inning this year, innings limit on German, Sabathia's age and health, Tanaka's fragility.  All of them could thrive with Green or Severino opening their games and there is every reason to believe that Severino would be just as effective as Green with his velocity once through the order.

Ben Heller is also an option as an opener and has been dealing so for in 5 outings in his rehab.

Our pen would be stacked with Chapman, Betances, Britton, Ottavino, and Kahnle.  As rosters expand we can see between Hale, Cessa, Loasiga, Adams, Cortes, and Garcia if anyone else deserves a postseason roster spot.

Now IS NOT the time. There’s a reason there haven’t been trades yet. Price tags are too high. Considering the talent available, you wait until the deadline when teams come down from their outrageous demands.

Betances has a history of inconsistencies.  He goes through periods of dominance followed by periods of 0 control.  He does not field his position well, opponents love to run on him after he either walks them or hits them.  He creates his own crises and then has to strike out the side to compensate.  I hate to imagine him coming back into important games and having to start up in August.  I am not sure the Yankees trade for any of the available starters, though Stroman did not pitch badly today.  A move to shore up the pen with a steadier option such as Shane Greene or Ian Kennedy is more appealing, but Kennedy is owed $$, so they probably don't want to go there.  Severino should come back about the time German reaches some kind of innings limit, and the other starters have looked much better recently.  Don't expect any huge moves.

If Betances gets back and is 100% healthy, he's light years better than S.Green or Kennedy, I honestly don't think we need anyone if Severino/Betances get back with a month or so left in the season..

Perhaps, but you need to remember that the trade rules changed this year, and the deadline is really the deadline this time around.

Yes, they did change, but I think that will drive prices down even more as we get closer to the deadline because it will be the last chance that teams have to trade people.
