And he just came off a championship too. It's really "what have you done for me lately" up there. They don't mess around.

Not that we ever see any of that on these boards!

Unbelievable..  Red Sox finished in first place in the AL East for 3 consecutive seasons, winning the W.S title in 2018.

Something must of occurred that the public is not privy to...

Not really, Lauren.  BoSox owner Jhn Henry made it pretty clear earlier in the season what he thought about having the highest payroll in MLB for the second season in a row and the results he was seeing this season.

Dombrowski is the ultimate sell your soul to win now and to hell with the future GM.  Both the Marlins and the Tigers had success under Dombrowski but are still trying to dig out from what he left behind.  Dombrowski was ony under contract thru next season.  Red Sox had to decide if he was the one to turn it around and give him an extension or go in a different direction.  They chose the latter.

He chose to let Kimbrel walk, arguably not a bad decision, but not replacing him obviously was.  RS bullpen has been bad all season.

He gave big contracts to Eovaldi and Steve Pearce, at least in part for their major contributions in the 2018 post season.  Neither has contrib uted much at all in 2019.   Contrast this with the Yankees letting Damon and Matsui walk after 2009.  Very unpopular especially since they were major factors in winning the 2009 WS.  But ultimately proven to be the right decision.

A $145 mil extension to Sale, $30+ mil annually for David Price, a totally barren farm system.  Mookie Betts likely to be traded because they likely can't afford to keep him.

The only surprise is that they did it now and not at the end of theseason.

I find it very interesting that Red Sox ownership fired Dave Dombrowski, who is a superb GM. I have to believe that there was a season-long philosophical disagreement between Dombrowski and ownership. Many people expected the Red Sox to have a fire sale at the trade deadline and start a rebuilding plan, and some of those people included Red Sox players themselves who said as much to reporters. I think Dombrowski wanted to sell off guys like Price and JD Martinez to acquire some prospects, and ownership is in a full win-now mode. I think it pains Dombrowski that the Red Sox minor leagues are ranked one of the worst in baseball, and ownership isn't as concerned with their minor league system. I think Dombrowski wanted to trade away some expensive veterans to reduce payroll in the short term so that the team would be better positioned to re-sign some of their players who will be eligible for free agency in the next year or two such as Holt, Betts and Bradley Jr., and ownership was not happy that the Red Sox roster was trending older and their win-now plans meant increasing their already league-high payroll year after year.

Hard to say what direction the Red Sox will go. Will they begin to tear it down and rebuild or will they look to add payroll, reload, and make another run at a title.
