The New York Giants made a rare trade with the rival Jets for defensive lineman Leonard Williams, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.

The Jets will receive a third-round pick in 2020 and a fifth-rounder in 2021, a source told Schefter. The fifth-round pick in 2021 will become a fourth-rounder if Williams signs an extension with the Giants before the start of the 2021 league year. The Jets are paying $4 million of the $6 million remaining on Williams' contract this year.

Williams, 25, was the sixth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. He has 240 tackles, 17 sacks, four passes defended, one interception and two forced fumbles in 71 games across his four-and-a-half seasons. He has been durable. He has not missed a game in his NFL career.

Giants GM Dave Gettleman is desperate to upgrade a pass rush and defense that he has both neglected and poorly misjudged in his first two years as GM.

On the surface, it seems like an odd move by the Giants. Of all their problems, defensive line does not feel like a front-burner issue after taking Dexter Lawrence with the No. 17 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Williams is only 25 and was the sixth-overall selection in the 2015 draft, at the time regarded in some circles as the best player in that draft. Williams, though, has not played to that level and he does not have a contract for the 2020 season. Why would the Giants send away two draft picks for a player they are renting for half a season? Perhaps they have already spoken with Williams about a contract.

Williams hasn’t created a lot of pressure, butwe can’t put all of that on him. In Gregg Williams’ scheme, the 25-year-old was asked to be a run defender, first and foremost, on early downs. He was lining up as a nose tackle on some snaps, taking on double teams as a 3-4 end on others and was rarely given a chance to line up as a penetrating 3-technique.

Those opportunities had mostly come on third-down plays, and Williams mostly took advantage of them producing a third-down pressure rate of 13.95%, which ranks 15th among ALL defensive lineman with at least 40 pass-rush snaps, per Sports Info Solutions. Only four defensive tackles — Aaron Donald (Rams), Geno Atkins (Bengals), Quinton Jefferson (Seahawks) and Maliek Collins (Cowboys) — have produced a higher rate of pressure on third-downs.

In the right situation, Williams can be a more productive interior rusher, which the Giants could certainly use.

Will the acquisition of Leonard Williams help improve a @Giants pass rush that has generated the 3rd-lowest pressure rate (19.6%) in the NFL this season?

Williams has twice as many pressures (14) as any other interior DL on his new team.
