By declining his opt year and buying him out for $5M doesn't necessarily mean he couldn't be signed to another contract ?? In saying that, I doubt they will go that unless it would be a need and the money is right ??

they could negotiate a new contract w him. while he seems generally hated around here, truth is he played well after the all star break, even to the point where he carried the team for a while. having said that, we definitely don't need him. we already have a number of DH types. we need a player w some veratility and who's more of a contact hitter. if we could only clone DJLM ...

^ Or create a DJL baby factory, where every few years we crank out a new baby DJL so our supply of young DJL's are never exhausted. Cool

Encarnacian will go to Boston and hit some bombs as their DH

He won't hit .300+ like Martinez likely will but he would likely hit as many HRs and he can fake it at 1B (and 2B for a couple of innings if need be) while Martinez is Frazier-like, or worse, in the OF.  If Martinez opts out - I don't think he will, I don't see the market as being that robust for a 32 year old DH - EE woud be an attrative option to the $62 mil currently left on Martinez' contract.

I would NEVER want him back after all those embarassing swing and misses and chasing balls in the dirt or way out of the strikezones during the playoffs!

If not swinging at pitches in the dirt or a foot off the plate was the criteria for players coming back we'd only have a couple players playing for us next year... Wink
