Padres To Name Larry Rothschild Pitching Coach

html_removed

The Padres are set to hire Larry Rothschild as their new pitching coach, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The 65-year-old was recently let go by the Yankees with 1 year remaining on his contract. Rothschild will be replacing one of the game’s longest-tenured coaches, Darren Balsley, who will change gears and work as a Special Assistant working with the club’s Minor League Pitchers.

Rothschild has spent the past 9 seasons as the Pitching Coach in the Bronx and spent 9 years prior to that as the Pitching Coach for the Cubs. He has extensive experience working as a Minor League Pitching Coordinator and Major League Bullpen Coach, and he was also the inaugural manager of the Tampa Bay Rays — a role he held from 1998 to 2001. Balsley, according to Acee, is taking on a less-demanding role in the organization to spend more time with his son, who has committed to play for San Diego State once he graduates high school this spring.

It’s the latest of several changes in the San Diego dugout this offseason. Manager Andy Green was fired after 4 years on the job, and he’s been replaced by the Rangers’ Jayce Tingler. Meanwhile, the Friars are also set to announce the hiring of Phillies Infield Coach Bobby Dickerson as their new bench coach.

Padres are also said to be in the hunt for Syndergaard & Strasburg, a San Diego native. Add those 2 in with Chris Paddack and it'd be a very strong rotation.

Good for Rothschild. Didn't take long for him to get a job because he was respected in baseball circles.

In some cases change is good, I think it was time to move on from Rothchild, I wish him luck, I just hope this Blake guy was the best move for us ?? I was hoping Cone would have gotten the job, but I suppose Ca$hman/Hal/Hank thought he might be too much old school ??

ya think ... if you listened to folks around here, he's the worst pitching coach of all-time. clearly the padres didn't think so. best to him moving forward.

I feel there should be 2 different positions ... head of picthing analytics and Pitching coach. A pitching coach should be someone who has experienced pitching in the MLB and in big situations that could instill the menatilty of being a successful pitcher. Stats are great for identifying talent, trends and situations but that doesnt necessaily translate real life situations controlling nerves and emotion comes into play or when going with your gut is sometimes a better option

This is a great pick by the Pads.  He'll be for the 3rd time sitting beside a young manager helping him to learn his way in the game.
