A safe fallback option could be New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler. Also 29 years old, Wheeler set career highs in innings pitched (195.1) and strikeouts (195) in 2019. The Mets dangled Wheeler before the July 31 trade deadline, and the Yankees were one of several teams interested. However if Cashman remains interested in Wheeler, he will need to open his wallet. Per the New York Post’s Joel Sherman:

In an unscientific survey of a half-dozen agents and executives, none said they anticipated Wheeler receiving less than four years at $75 million, and a couple went as high as five years at $100 million.

MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports three teams are showing early interest in Wheeler: the Los Angeles Angels, San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox. Wheeler has until Thursday to accept or reject the Mets’ one-year, $17.8 million qualifying offer.

Wheeler would be the next Sonny Gray\J. Vazquez type imo.  Mediocre pitcher in the NL East...In the AL East in Yankee Stadium, he becomes a high 4\low 5 ERA guy prone to the long ball.  Yanks have to stop with the attempted band aids on the cheap and get themselves someone who is a legitamate ace imo.  It makes no sense to pay this guy 20M a year...just go pay Cole or Stasburg whatever it takes imo.

I'm not high on Wheeler ... I'm thinking the Yankees at least need to land Strasburg.

I'm not too excited about Strasburg because he has a pretty long injury history

Wasn't aware of that ... these players just can't stay on the field.

If they can't get Cole I'd settle for a Wheeler, he's pitched under the big lights of NYCity and is coming into his own, besides the money would be a lot less than for a Cole or Strasburg... But my first choice would for certain be Cole he's the diamond in the FA market ...

I've checked out his stats and the man just doesn't impress me.

Let me guess on this....

Cole to the Angels for $270M

Stras stays in DC for $210M

Wheeler to San Diego for $75M

Cashman......we tried, but we feel we already have a great rotation that can compete.

Let's see how right/wrong I am in April....haha

I'm scared that you could be 100% right on the money.

First off, you can't make a player come to a place he does not want to.  Strasburg, in all likelihood stays in DC because he likes it there and they likely will pay him close enough to top dollar to get it done imo.

Cole on the other hand is not going back to Houston (they don't have the money) and pretty much has made his intentions to get the bucks known with that whole Boras hat thing.  Could he give LA a home team type of discount....sure.  Will he do so if say the Yankes offer 25-30M more-4M a year more on avg a year...I just tend to doubt it.  Certainly possible though.  The Yanks might have to offer a decent amount more than LA to get him to jump their way in a manner similar to what happened with CC originally.  The Yanks are imo at the point where they just need to do whatever it takes within reason to get it one.  Cole and Boras have them between a rock and a hard place and they know it.  That is what happens when you do not produce top SPs out of your farm system for 25+ years and make poor choices to fix the problem over the past 3-5 years.  They just need to recognize that imo, do their due diligence and just go pay what it takes.  The alternive is more ALDS and ALCS eliminations imo.

As to Wheeler, mentione it before, medicore SP from a bad team.  In the AL east in Yankee Stadium, it is another Sonny Gray\J. Vazquez waiting to happen imo.  Stop with the band aids for the pitching staff.  Wheeler is in no way even a good number 2 right now.  They need quality at the top, not more medicority in the middle imo.
