When it was being suggested baseball might start the season but without allowing fans into the ballparks, a rival team exec said to me: “That wouldn’t be a problem for the Marlins. They play in an empty stadium every night. Nobody knows they’re even there.”

Uh huh.

China has already lowered the bell on the epidemic. It'll be four weeks for the bell curve to be lowered here.

There will be a season. (face palm)

You can only push back the season for only so long. Baseball can’t be played into December.

Let's also not forget that China had a very strict and almost Draconian response to the outbreak. The US is not going to (read as can't) institue those same protocols.

Hey! I was on Niles' board for a bit but it got so quiet when Cat started up her board. Sadly, Cat didn't invite me so I had to find a new place.

You must be of a particular political persuasion to be welcome and allowed to participate on Cat's board. Not sure you'd fit the bill.

You realize they can shorten the season right?

Of course we do.  And given that it is highly unlikely the season will open on 9 April (I am guessing the over/under will be Memorial Day) there is no way they will get 162 games in.  The question then becomes how many games do you need for a "legitimate" season?  120?  100?  81?

I wondered if Memorial; Day was teh over/under for opening day.  Looks like it might be the under:

"Initially, Major League Baseball called off the rest of the spring training schedule and said opening day, which had been scheduled for March 26, was postponed for at least two weeks.

But after a development over the weekend, the league announced Monday a further delay.

On Sunday night, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended gatherings of 50 people or more be canceled or postponed across the country for the next eight weeks.

Due to that CDC update, opening day "will be pushed back," MLB said.

MLB said it remains committed to scheduling as many games as possible."
