Will he be a Yankee in 2021, and if not, would it be the Yankees who want to move on or Tanaka?

They should extend him now 3 years $17M with a team option year 4 and make sure that Happ doesnt reach his option year

That money saved will pay off Tanakas first year

Happ likely to get 2 more starts and finish with 9.  Prorated he needed 10 starts for the optoion to vest so this will likley end up before an arbitrator.  However, given the results of his first 2 starts Yankees can absolutely defend skippin him to get an extra start from Cole.

I could be wrong but I think both Tanaka and Yankees want to get another deal done, I predict if Tanaka doesn't sign with the Yankees he might just go home a play ???

At first I would not have cared if Tanaka walked and they resigned Paxton. Now I say stay away from Paxton and resign Tanaka 2 or 3 years with an extra option and he will be the gap until we get the young guys ready.

I think that's about right. Tanaka clearly loves being in NY and I think the Yanks love him back. I also can see him aging well as a pitcher, similar to Kuroda and Iwakuma. He's a known quantity going forward and the Yanks need to make it happen.

Tanaka is both NY proven and post season tested.

Might have to give in to an extra year as a sunk cost most likely to get it done.

I'm in accord on this. Tanaka has remained healthy, a big plus on this team, and is a proven postseason money pitcher.

Consensus from beat writers is that Tanaka will stay, while Happ and Paxton are done.

If Happ is dominant tomorrow I think they let him reach the option.
