What's cookin' everyone!
Hopefully by now you've checked out the first couple of content editions of MyYES Weekly, a new web show we've got here at YESNetwork.com hosted by my longtime colleague Joe Auriemma and I. If you haven't seen the latest edition, check it out here. Some movie discussion comes up in each of the shows, most notably in the first one when Joe gave us a quick review of 'The Fighter,' a nominee for this year's Best Picture Oscar and a film considered to be among the finest sports movies in recent years.
I haven't seen 'The Fighter,' but it would be hard pressed to crack my 'fave five' when it comes to sports movies. While I understand that a few of these might not draw much critical praise, they each have two things in common: they rank off the charts when it comes to re-watchability, and I can't get enough of any of them
#5 - 'Blue Chips - This movie was an EVENT for basketball fans in the age 13 to 16 bracket. ShaqMania was sweeping the nation, there are a number of cameos, and the on-court basketball scenes are believeable. Plus, this was also back when it meant something to have Nick Nolte as a star, and Ed O'Neill was in the midst of his 'very underrated' phase.
#4 - 'Major League' - arguably the standard bearer of sports comedies. I didn't need the romance angle between Tom Berenger and Renee Russo, and I also wanted more of Harris' character in the movie. Still, the fact that Charlie Sheen was, as it turns out, playing himself? Brilliant.
#3 - 'Hoosiers' - I'm a sucker for Gene Hackman. I also like fish-out-of-water stories...and death-of-the-American-ideal fare like 'American Beauty' and 'Revolutionary Road,' but we're talking sports here. I tend not to root for the underdog, but how can anyone not pull for Hickory High? This movie gets bonus points for having a musical score you could listen to on its own from start to finish.
#2 - 'A League Of Their Own' - I remember my reaction when this movie first came out. "Girls playing baseball? No thanks." I don't think I've ever been so wrong about anything. There are a few inconsistencies that nag at me, like how I always wonder how Tom Hanks' Rockford club got through a seven-game World Series with what appears to be one starting pitcher, Ellen Sue, since Betty Spaghetti left the team when her husband was killed and Kit had long since been traded to Racine). However, the fact that the script contains one quotable line after another trumps those minor details!
#1 - 'Rocky 3' - Brilliance. Rocky letting success go to his head. Clubber Lang standing as possibly the greatest villain in sports movie history. Adrian's work is kept to a minimum. As a huge Apollo Creed fan, I loved how he was in the entire second half of the movie and I would pay whatever price needed to see him and Clubber fight in real life. I still think Rocky should've pursued some legal action against Clubber for inducing Mickey's fatal heart attack, but regardless, I'm always glued to the television whenever Rocky tries to get his title back. I'm always disappointed by the outcome though...I root for Clubber every time.
