Yankees Notes through 8 Games:
I spent an early season moment in thought today. It was completely unfamiliar territory but I wanted to mention some things I've noticed through 8 games. The Yankees so far, while playing to a 5-3 record, have hardly played their best baseball. The starting pitching has been hit or miss and half the line up isn't hitting yet.
CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Andy Pettitte have all pitched well in their first 2 outings. Together they've won 5 out of their 6 starts. Javier Vazquez has pitched poorly in both of his starts but it's really too soon to make any conclusions about him. Although watching today's game, you could hear some boos. Not a good sign! The bullpen has also pitched well for the most part and kept the Yankees in some close games.
Robinson Cano, Jorge Posada, Nick Swisher, Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson have all hit well to start the season and are all over .300 after 8 games. The 2 main sluggers have struggled terribly though. Mark Teixera and A-Rod have hit .097 and .257 respectively with 0 home runs between them. Brett Gardner, after a hot start, has struggled in the last 3 games but the Yankees need to give him a good look just for the speed and energy he brings to the line up.
Minor League and Other Notes:
- The Yankees top 3 minor league teams all won their first games of the season with shut outs. I wonder when was the last time that happened. Jesus Montero, while recording a hit in each game, has hit only .250 so far. He has been hitting in the 6 spot as to not put too much pressure on him to carry the offense. Probably a smart move considering he's playing in AAA and he's only 20 years old.
- Hector Noesi has pitched brilliantly and won his first 2 starts for Tampa (12 IP, 1.50 era) while Andrew Brackman has struggled (8IP, 13.50era) and lost both of his starts.
- Phil Hughes first start of the season is tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing him pitch.
- I'll bet my girlfriend gets me tickets to Yankees games for our anniversary and for my birthday. I love her and can't wait to get to the stadium this year!
