EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- New York Giants All Pro defensive end Osi Umenyiora practiced on Wednesday for the first time since injuring a hip against the Dallas Cowboys more than a month ago and missing five straight games.

Starting cornerback Sam Madison also returned to practice, while weakside linebacker Brandon Short practiced for the second straight week.

Madison has missed the last two games since aggravating a hamstring injury against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 12. Short injured a quad against Tampa Bay on Oct. 29 and has been sidelined the last four games.

Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan worked in individual drills for the first time since injuring a foot against Houston on Nov. 5.

Umenyiora, Short and Madison are being listed as questionable for Sunday's NFC East showdown between the Giants (6-5) and Dallas (7-4). Strahan is doubtful.

Middle linebacker Antonio Pierce didn't practice because of swelling in his knee, but he is expected to play Sunday.

"I think it would be a boost to our team," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said of the possibility of getting three starters back on defense. "Not just our defense, but to our team, to be able to have not only the veteran experience but to have the quality of the players. I think our team will respond to the fact that these guys are ready to go."

Umenyiora led the Giants with five sacks before suffering a hip flexor injury.

"I'm very excited about getting back out on the field," Umenyiora said. "Hopefully, I'll be able to get back out there and do a couple of things."

We need all the players we can get. This coming game is the season in my mind.

Don't know about the Wild Card though...

The Giants need all hands on deck for this one...well, since that can't happen, all the hands on deck that they can get. The defense that has played these last 3 weeks isn't going to beat Dallas. Getting Osi back is a big plus.

Umenyiora, Short, and Madison are being listed as questionable

It'd be nice if the other 2 on that list could make it.
