Breaking News: Hufnagel No Longer Calling Shots

The first axe fell on the Giants today, and it landed squarely on offensive coordinator John Hufnagel.

APThe much-maligned offensive coordinator, who has been the subject of a ton of external and internal criticism, was stripped of his play-calling duties by head coach Tom Coughlin. Quarterbacks coach Kevin Gilbride will call the plays in Saturday's regular-season finale in Washington.

Hufnagel, according to the team, will continue "in an administrative role with the offensive staff."

It might be a last-ditch effort to save his job, since the Giants co-owners were preparing to ask Coughlin to fire Hufnagel after the season anyway. Clearly, though, Coughlin had to do something in the wake of the Giants' putrid offensive showing on Sunday in their 30-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints -- a game in which the offense did not take a single snap past midfield.

"This isn⁈⁚t about making John the scapegoat," Coughlin said. "Nobody on this staff works harder than John, and he has tried to do everything that I have asked of him. I have great respect for him and for his work ethic and I feel a strong loyalty to John because of that, so this is a difficult thing for me to do. But we have to do something to give us a spark."

The Giants have a night practice tonight, so be sure to tune in for more later and, of course, in tomorrow's Daily News.

And while we're dropping bombshells, here are a few more ...

  • Defensive end Michael Strahan re-injured his foot on Sunday and was placed on season-ending injured reserve yesterday.

  • Left tackle Luke Petitgout, who broke his leg on Nov. 5 but was hoping to return in time for the playoffs, was placed on IR, too.

  • The Giants also IR-ed kick returner Chad Morton, who tore an ACL in his knee on Sunday.

The Giants signed WR Darius Watts and TE Darcy Johnson from their practice squad and RB Robert Douglas from the Texans' practice squad to take their places on the roster.
