Did he say "If the yankees are seriously considering signing Lilly, they won't go after Pettitte" or "Offering to sign Lilly means they think they won't get Pettitte"?

Or "Cashman says Pettitte is no longer an option"?

I still don't buy this as a rumor. He'll be a Cub, and I don't think the Yanks matched that offer. It doesn't line up with anything they've said or done this offseason. They whole reason they bid on Igawa was because they DIDN'T want to offer Lilly or Meche 4/40.

If it were my choice I'd choose Pettite for 1 year over Lilly for 4. This signing is essentially the 6th starting pitching slot (counting Igawa) and would give the Yankees 3 LH SPs. Truthfully I hope neither signings happen and pray for Pavano to come back, so the Yankees can start on their promise to deflate their payroll. George won't be around forever, and I think the next owner of the yankees is going to want a more financially efficient team.
