ooookay....now I'm starting to understand...sort of?...say, can someone share some thoughts on this Clint Frazier fella..and oh yeah, how about Gleyber (seriously?) Torres...they seem like real "hot shots"...any chance of them making the 40 man roster?

Yankees' top prospect Gleyber Torres wins another award

The Venezuelan put on a show last fall winning the batting title and MVP of the Arizona Fall League as a 19-year-old and he did it again this spring at 20, this time facing some big-league pitching

And so, the Yankees name an outstanding spring training rookie every year and the 2017 choice Torres was a no-brainer for the James P. Dawson Award, which was announced Monday.

A top-5 prospect in baseball, Torres was so good before his reassignment to the minor-league camp last week that there was some media campaigning for the Yankees to let him play shortstop in April while starter Didi Gregorius is on the disabled list recovering from a right shoulder injury.

In his first big-league spring training, Torres hit .448 with six doubles, a triple, two homers and nine RBIs in 29 at-bats over 19 games.

Torres is expected to start the season playing in the Eastern League for the Double-A Trenton Thunder.

The Yankees acquired Torres last July in the Aroldis Chapman trade with the Chicago Cubs.

"I think (Torres has) handled the expectations well up until this point," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said recently. "Obviously when we acquired him, his name was a big name in that trade and he went out and won the MVP of the Fall League.

"I like what I see from him. He's a strong young man that uses the whole field and he's got a lot of life in his bat. He's played shortstop well. I see why people are excited about him and we're very excited."

The New York Yankees today announced that infielder Gleyber Torres is the recipient of the 2017 James P. Dawson Award, given annually to the outstanding Yankees rookie in spring training.

In his first Major League spring training, Torres hit .448/.469/.931 (13-for-29) with 8R, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 2HR and 9RBI in 19 games. The 20-year-old won the 2016 Arizona Fall League MVP award after becoming the youngest player in league history to win the batting title. Over three minor league seasons, the Caracas, Venezuela, native has hit .282 (323-for-1,147) with 172R, 61 doubles, 16 triples, 16HR and 163RBI in 301 games. He was acquired by the Yankees from the Chicago Cubs along with RHP Adam Warren, OF Billy McKinney and OF Rashad Crawford in exchange for LHP Aroldis Chapman on July 25, 2016.

The award was established in honor of James P. Dawson (1896-1953), who began a 45-year career with The New York Times as a copy boy in 1908. Eight years later, he became boxing editor and covered boxing and baseball until his death during spring training in 1953.

Two winners of the honor, Tony Kubek in 1957 and Tom Tresh in 1962, went on to win the American League "Rookie of the Year" Award. The Dawson Award first was presented to rookie Norm Siebern by Manager Casey Stengel in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the conclusion of spring training in 1956. New York Yankees beat writers vote on the winner.

In conjunction with the award, Torres will receive a watch from Betteridge Jewelers.

Clipper,

checked the list of receipients tosee how many I was familiar with....what's with the "none selected" years?...any explanation?...

were the rookies all that great that they couldn't select just one?

The baseball writers decide that the camp didn't any players worth consideration for the award. Mr. Dawson was highly liked by the team, I think that it is the right thing to do. I did post about the minor league player awards for  the best position player and Pitcher in the Yankees organization called the Kevin Lawn Award which you should check out.

2016 James P. Dawson Award winner Pitcher Johny Barbato was traded by the Yankees to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Pirates have assigned him to their AAA Club in Indapolis.
