I'm not a Hall fan, but a minor league deal doesn't hurt anything.  I'm sure he has some time limit on that deal if he doesn't make the NY team out of ST.

3:24pm: Hall will earn a base salary of $600K in the Major Leagues and can earn more incentives based on plate appearances, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. Hall can opt out of his deal if he isn't on the Major League roster on April 4th.

Not a horrible minor league signing but I wonder where this leaves Chavez.

That's what I said.  Most of these veteran players who sign these deals have some sort of optout.  Some after ST, others maybe 30 or 60 days later if they're sent down to AAA.  They can opt out and become a free agent again.  Not unusual.   CC pushed for this guy to be signed.  If he makes the team 600 grand isn't a bad payday. I personally think he's shot, but a minor league deal won't hurt them.

That's the question now.  I saw an article a few days ago that they still have some interest in Chavez.  I still don't think they're crazy about Chavez' health situation though.  5 years in a row with DL stints including 4 surgeries.

This article is brand new:

Bill Hall in, Chavez still possible

On his Twitter account, Bill Hall just tweeted: IT'S OFFICIAL IM A YANKEE!!!!!!!! #IwannaRing!!!!

First, Hall is going to #wannarosterspot.

Hall, a source informs, signed a one-year minor league deal that could be worth $600,000 plus incentives.

If Eric Chavez is not signed, Hall may have the inside track on the other backup infielder spot, but he will have competition. Brandon Laird and Ramiro Pena figure to be Hall's main competition.

A source said that the signing of Hall will not have any impact on if the Yankees were to bring back Chavez or not. Chavez, along with Raul Ibanez, Johnny Damon and/or Hideki Matsui could still be inked by the Yankees before spring training begins.

Hall, 32, played 62 games for the Astros and Giants last season. He hit .210.

Hall’s odds of making the team would go up appreciably if Chavez doesn’t return. The Yankees are still in talks with Chavez. Chavez, 34, hit .263 with two homers and 26 RBIs last season. He played 58 games as his season was shortened by injuries. It was the most games Chavez had played in a season since 2007.

It could be a good move, Pena gave us Colon last season when nobody saw anything in him so if Long fixed Hall and he could show something this spring who knows?  It does seem strange that they went for Hall like this and passed on Betemit.
