Right or wrong, the voters made a statement yesterday. Makes you wonder if A-Rod perhaps isn't the HOF lock that we all assumed.
Andy Pettitte was never a HOF lock but hopefully his admitted hgh use doesn't hurt his chances....

A-Rod won't get into the HOF and Pettitte I doubt will too. He may get close but now-a-days voters are very unforgiving even if Pettite had cried and pleaded for people to forgive him. You can blame that on the very sensitive and touchy nature that society has become. Not just in baseball but in general too.

It definitely doesn't help his chances, although Andy isnt really thought of as a cheat these days unlike Bonds and Roger... I think Pettitte is a fringe candidate regardless...his resume doesnt quite stack up at the HOF level IMO, but we'll see what happens with Mussina. If Moose gets in then Andy has a shot if voters overlook his hgh use...
You also have to wonder if these guys were kept out for being jerks. When Ortiz is up (and he's a likeable guy) for election we'll see if voters overlook his use and put him in.

a bit off topic, I suppose, but I'd really like your insights on a pet peeve of mine re: the HOF . . . as an Dodger fan during my younger years (I was born in Brooklyn), the failure of the Hall of Fame to induct Gil Hodges has, at various time, perplexed, befuddled, confused, and infuriated me . . . I know his eligibility for selection by the writers has long passed, but why the veterans' committee consistently refuses to right this wrong just baffles my brain and burns my butt . . . any insights/thoughts/opinions/beliefs regarding what I consider a travesty of the highest order would be greatly appreciated . . . thanx . . .

ortiz still has to deal with the DH thing
but frank thomas most likely will have broken down broken open that wall by then moose is kind of a strange case while time / years will help the users time / years is already hurting the moose his great winning %, all in the AL east, is his strongest point but as the years go by it looks like wins will mean less & less personally I say no about moose

I think Edgar should also get in, and him and Thomas will open the door for Ortiz IMO. I agree with you about Moose, but he's got a nice resume of a lot of wins, a good ERA, and the fact he pitched in the AL East at a high level for the most part. Moose's Orioles career is also really underrated, IMO. If Benitez doesn't blow a ton of saves Moose's resume is even more impressive. If he gets in, I think that will open the door for Pettitte. Assuming Pettitte beefs up his wins and stats over the next couple of years.

This whole process has to be re-examined. IMO A-Rod will have it tough b/c he admitted his use. Ive maintained here often, that as long a "the list" is kept sealed, other players who are in doubt, should not be left out of the HOF b/c of supposed use. With Bonds, his physique change over time is enough for me to keep him out if I was voting. That applies to others as well. With Roger, I feel differently. He was ALWAYS known as a work horse, and workOUT addict. He was dragged through the judiciary process (in a BIG way) and came away not guilty. Andy's use, IMO, was nothing like the "true" PED users. From my perspective, his stats earn him a berth. His minor infraction ( if I'm correct, what he did wasnt illegal back then) shouldnt be used against him.

Both Gil, Donnie and Dale Murphy are MUCH MORE deserving than Ortiz. Does anyone really believe Ortiz wasn't taking PEDs with Manny?

Lets remember... since the word 'cheater' was thrown out there, they weren't actually cheaters since it wasn't illegal yet Love it when owners and MLB turn a blind eye to PEDs as they rake in the cash. With voting writers going on a rampage in regards to "cheaters" wanting to place labels for the Steroid era, why not place a label on the Corked bat era, Greenies era...etc.....The point is each era has it's degree of vices and it didn't prevent them from getting into baseball HOF.
