When assessing the motives of Mr. Cashman I think it is important to keep in mind that Alex Rodriguez has a career home run total of 647. If he were to return to New York and hit an additional 13 home runs ...the Yankees would owe him a bonus check of $30 M! Not only would the team not get the 80% of his $28 M salary for 2013...they would be forced to pony up $30 M more! The total swing is $52 M dollars...enough for Cashman to buy charm lessons !

Me thinks Hal hoped for a delay in the return of A Rod...and maybe a suspension. Then with some good luck, he could sell the team before 13 A Rod home runs were hit. Folks, if you think you got some good quotes from the A Rod tweet...wait till you hear what these guys say if Rodriguez hits 13 home runs this year !!!

The bonus is $6M for hitting 660 homers.

You are right...the first bonus is $6 M, the total bonus pool is $30 M...and for that he has to hit a total of 103 home runs. That said...I want the camera on Hal's face when each of the milestones is reached. As I have always said...I will root for A Rod to hit home runs as long as he is a Yankee. And if it costs the Steinbrenner's a few bucks...it is even more fun !

IMO its a huge leap to think A-Rod will ever play enough, if at all as a Yankee, to hit those bonus numbers.

Like me trying to leap across the Grand Canyon from a standstill.

you just revealed your true self...  we all know Superman takes a running start before he flies away...  now you don't have to wear those goofy glasses anymore...

I love these glasses.  They make me look intelligent.

One aspect of A Rod's strange personality is his obsession to be great. The freakin guy would take stuff from an idiot like Anthony Boesch if he thought it would help him hit ! Given his natural ability and complete willingness to use any substance at any time to enhance it...I would not be shocked if he came back and hit 50 home runs ! I still remember what Barry Bonds was doing with the help of Balco. Bonds was 42 years old, playing the field and had an obp of 480 in his final season. In fact, I got this strange thought that A Rod had his doctors implant a nuclear powered artificial hip! He really would be the 6 Million Dollar Man!

reading these posts, the steroid discussion, I have to laugh,

Look folks...if Tex was able to hit 3 hrs with a bad wrist just waiting for an operation - think about that for a moment - he couldn't really hit (.151) but hit 3 hr's in 15 games.  These guys are strong!  I've seen guys break bats and hit home runs.  That's how strong they are.  Did you see that long hr Gardy hit the other night?  Modern day hitters are strong!

Then:

(1) If "big if" since none of us are doctors examining him or the mri's - If Alex is healthy to play baseball including playing 3rd base.

(2) He comes in clean w/o peds. and he is not suspended by mlb for the Biogenisis issue.

(3) Given that (1) above is true and he is not suspended

(4) He won't hit 13 home runs this year but he'll put enough on the board to make the H&H turkeys get very nervous and even more irritable.

(5) If he is able to play in 2014...he'll reach the 13 hr barrier.  His 30M marketing bonus is payable for 660-763 home runs.

(6) Say you don't like Alex, there are many reasons for that position.  Say you think Hank is a jerk for the A-Rod contract.

Try to convince me how a healthy but tarnished player that put up hof stats can't hit 13 measly home runs.  Turkey Hank & Hal realize this...that's what's going on here folks.  They'll do anything to void his contract but they can't.  They'll work with mlb to get him suspended...they'll float stories and do everything possible.  Follow the money trail applies here.  Maybe it will work and maybe the guy is healthy, not suspended and plays baseball.

(7) A healthy 37-38 y/o Alex has enough talent and power left to hit 13 all-natural home runs.

Cashman, your cleanup hitter today is hitting .233 with an OPS of .633, going 0 for 3, 3 K.

Your cleanup hitter hits worse than most #9 hitters in the majors.
