exactly. point is jury is still out on robertson as a closer. and who's gonna set up. claiborne, kelley? no thanks. robertson setting up and wilson closing would be very strong. but yeah forgot about the beard issue.

That doesn't impress you? Especially after the Tiger bullpen choke job in game 2. That series should be over with, instead it's tied 2-2.

brian wilson has looked great for the dodgers. .66 era & .88 whip during shortened regular season. free agent after season and thinking he wants to be a closer again. only 31. he's someone we should go after. don't have a lot of faith in robertson as full-time closer - better as a setup guy. wondering why we didn't sign him during the season.
He was offered 1 million to shave the beard by a razor company. He's not shaving that beard to come join the Yankees.
Robertson hasn't had a chance to close. Not saying he's Maria no but even he needed time to establish himself.
The Yankees do need relievers/closers for next year. ..I just wouldn't arbitrarily say Robertson can't do the job
DRob ain't Maria? Then again who is?
LOL....I signed on on my cellphone & it auto corrected Mariano to Maria no

any one who turns down a million $$ to shave his beard is nuts ...let him stay on the west coast ..

Actually it is more likely the Tigers would be up 3 games to one if they had a Mariano-esque closer and not blown that 5-1 lead in game 2.
Interesting, isn't it, how there was a spate of articles this past year about how the value of closers is overrated, based largely on the fact that even bad teams still win close to 90% of their games when they are leading after 8. But there is no denying that Mo was a major factor in whatever post season success the Yankees enjoyed during his time. A success that only gets magnified any time a team blows a late post season game lead.

Point being the reason the Yanks were so good in the playoffs over Mariano's career was because he had a 0.70 ERA in the postseason. If the Yanks got him the ball with a lead he was virtually lights out.
I'd be happy bringing in a guy with a postseason track record to close.

It doesn't impress me. Getting impressed by such a small sample size is just silly. Papelbon had a 0.00 e.r.a. in his first 24 post season innings and I don't want him as the closer either. All this never ending talk about giving our own kids a chance on this board but whenever there is an opening that can be filled by a kid they start talking about free agents to give the job to.

Id agree except IMO its a monumental stretch to call 18 innings a ' post season track record' when looking at Mo's 141 innings.

And then they cry when the FO doesn't spend enough money to bring in the top FA or want to trade the best player on the team for a bunch of unproven kids.

Not everyone gets to play for the Yankees and play post-season ball just about every year. 18 scoreless innings during the play-offs is damn impressive. And if Papelbon didn't act like a complete ****, you would want him.
