I know one thing. If we had somehow been able to communicate with Munson in the afterlife before his number was retired and told him "We're going to retire your number next week, right alongside Ruth and Gehrig, because you died so tragically." He would have said "F*** that, either give it to me on my performance alone or keep it!" He wouldn't have wanted the circumstances of his death to have anything at all to do with the decision to approve any honors he might receive.
I don't think you have the right to say what you just said ... you have no clue what Munson would have wanted ... all this proves to me is that you really do make it up as you go along.
I will state without reservation that Munson would never accept an honor that was undeserved, an honor in which his untimely death played even a small part in approving. I know, and you know, and the HOF voters knew/know, and Munson knew that his numbers just didn't deserve being ranked among the all-time greats. He wasn't the kind of guy who would accept anything that wasn't 100% earned on merit.
It wasn't undeserved!

AROD put up numbers Munson couldn't dream of and AROD wasn't half the player or man or Yankee Munson was.

Stewie, It's more than just stats that got Munson's number retired. It was also character and him being one of the more respected players of the time.
Matt,
What? He played hard and hustled? We retire numbers for that? He just did what every player is supposed to do: play every game as if it mattered and leave it all out on the field. Sorry, but that's not enough. The numbers just aren't there. It was very sad when he got himself killed (see the NTSB accident report) and nearly got two other people killed along with him but that has nothing to do with retiring a number. I've beaten this horse long enough; if you don't get the distinction between superstar and "Gee it's too bad he died so young" then I can't make you see it.
Ignorant much?

luv,
It's called an opinion; that's why we're here. We have a difference of opinion, that's all. I believe Munson was a very good ballplayer. You believe that Munson is some sort of tragic demigod because he died young. You also believe that he belongs in the same category as Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle, and I think that belief is patently absurd. Capisci, paisano?
You don't insult a Yankee legend and call it a "difference of opinion" and expect respect do you? Typical 96er... 09er...

luv,
His numbers were good, not great.
He played the way we wish every Yankee would play, all out and with heart.
His loss is irrelevant to whether or not his number is retired. If it were, every player who fell in front of a subway train would get his number retired. His loss was worse; it was due to his reckless hubris, and he came within a hair of killing two others along with him. That kind of behavior doesn't rate adulation in my book, or the book of any sane individual.
You are a true scumbag.

It's only on the Internet you are among human filth and stupidity like Stewie here. You need to get your azz kicked.

None of you has been able to point out one lie in anything I've said because there are none. Everything I've said is the truth. You all seem to have a blind spot when it comes to Munson that's probably due to a hero worship connected to your youth and his tragic passing. He was your hero and anyone who says anything negative, anything that doesn't support your mental narrative of him as perfect, is, and I quote, a "scumbag." The fact that everything I said is the absolute truth doesn't slow you down one bit; you're determined to hate and ridicule anyone who contradicts your childish fantasy. Was he a very good player? Yes. Did he have an unselfish, team-oriented, never-quit attitude? Absolutely. Were his numbers worthy of inclusion in the pantheon of Yankee legends? No. Was he voted into the HOF? His closest was 15%, well short of the 75% required. Was his fatal accident due to his own recklessness and lack of experience and skill? Yes, just ask the NTSB. If these truths are inconvenient for you it's not my problem.

Little punk can't get through a day without his stats. Good for you stewie

Still don't see you pointing out any lies in anything I've said. Just more insipid commentary about how I'm a "little punk" who needs his "a.. kicked." So, you're an Internet tough guy. Good luck with that.

You are not worth any serious commentary or debate. I don't deal with punks who live off stat sheets.
As I said earlier Munson was a better player and Yankee than AROD and no true Yankee fan could argue that.
