TAMPA — Add Andy Pettitte to the growing list of Yankees legends. The Yankees will honor the popular lefty with Andy Pettitte Day on Aug. 23 at Yankee Stadium in a ceremony prior to a game against the Indians, during which he will receive a plaque in Monument Park and have his No. 46 retired, thus becoming the 16th retired number in franchise history.
Josh Pettitte, one of the pitcher’s three sons, broke the news on Sunday when he announced the Yankees’ plans on Twitter.Pettitte, 42, joined Mariano Rivera in retirement following the 2013 season. In 18 big league seasons, Pettitte went 256-153, including 219-127 in 15 years as a Yankee. He also pitched three seasons with the Astros.
Pettitte, along with Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter and Rivera, was part of the “Core Four’’ of the latest Yankees dynasty. Rivera’s No. 42 is retired. Jeter’s No. 2 will eventually be retired, and there is a good chance Posada’s No. 20 also will be put away for good.
While his record makes Pettitte a borderline Hall of Fame candidate, there is no doubt voters will hold his admission of using PEDs against him when he appears on the ballot. That admission, however, did little to harm Pettitte’s standing in The Bronx where he remains very popular with the fan base.
