Yankees to retire Andy Pettitte’s number in August festivities

TAMPA — Add Andy Pettitte to the growing list of Yankees legends. The Yankees will honor the popular lefty with Andy Pettitte Day on Aug. 23 at Yankee Stadium in a ceremony prior to a game against the Indians, during which he will receive a plaque in Monument Park and have his No. 46 retired, thus becoming the 16th retired number in franchise history.

Josh Pettitte, one of the pitcher’s three sons, broke the news on Sunday when he announced the Yankees’ plans on Twitter.Pettitte, 42, joined Mariano Rivera in retirement following the 2013 season. In 18 big league seasons, Pettitte went 256-153, including 219-127 in 15 years as a Yankee. He also pitched three seasons with the Astros.

Pettitte, along with Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter and Rivera, was part of the “Core Four’’ of the latest Yankees dynasty. Rivera’s No. 42 is retired. Jeter’s No. 2 will eventually be retired, and there is a good chance Posada’s No. 20 also will be put away for good.

While his record makes Pettitte a borderline Hall of Fame candidate, there is no doubt voters will hold his admission of using PEDs against him when he appears on the ballot. That admission, however, did little to harm Pettitte’s standing in The Bronx where he remains very popular with the fan base.

I am a big fan too...and I loved Posada and Bernie...but I am not sure if I am a fan of 3 digit uniform numbers. I think a plaque and a tribute day would be just fine.

Given the state of the Yankees minor league system right now you can rest assured that the other 79 numbers are safe. We won't see a group of 5 homegrown talents like that any time soon.

The Yankees don't only retire home grown numbers. Maris, Ruth, the most undeserving Jackson, amd you can bet if not for the mess of the last few years Alex Rodriguez number would have been retired.

Instead of 3 digit numbers, I believe they should use letters and symbols.

Bomber, I think Billy Marin is more underserving then Jackson. Marginal player and only managed them to one WS title. Both don't deserve their numbers retired, Maris either. IMO should be a HOFer and played the majority of your career as a Yankee.

The Steinbrenners have retirement-itis.

The number retirement thing is watered down...  They should put the player's name and number up similar to what the Cowboys did in Texas Stadium. Didn't they call it the "Ring of Honor"?  The numbers should be issued to players who prove themselves worthy, or by the former wearer's request...

I've never been a big fan of retiring managers numbers.. I think there could be some other kind of award, players I agree with.. I also think Andy's number should be retired as well, I also agree with the core four and Bernie..

Completely ridiculous.  Diminishes retiring numbers.  Diminishes the others whose numbers have been retired or who deserve it but havent yet.

WIN - THAT'S ALL!
