Test Post

This is a test post. It should be the 1st post on a new page. If it doesn't show up, the easiest fix would probably be to just start a new thread. If that's the case, you will see the new thread and this one. Please pin the new thread and unpin this current one.

It's clear that if George Steinbrenner was alive today the Yankees would look at least a little different. Moncada would probably be heading to Trenton next year instead of Portland, and Cano might still be playing second in the Bronx. On the other hand, maybe the Yankees would have closed the deal on Cliff Lee or gone after a magnificent bust of a free agent like Josh Hamilton (you know how George loved a redemption story). Among fans, views on how the team should operate are pretty polarized. On one side you have those who believe that if the Yankees aren't spending at least 20 percent more than anyone else, then they're not really trying and on the other, those who want them to build their club like they play in Pittsburgh - prospects, prospects, prospects. To his credit, Hal is trying to find a middle ground somewhere. Is George rolling? Eh...maybe just fidgeting a bit.

Does anyone really think George would have tolerated the 2B fiasco the last 2 years as well as the embarassment of signing Capuano to a $5 million contract, having him DFAd 4 times but still end up pitching in the last game of the year where a win was needed?

This article's writer's "on the one hand" and "on the other hand" stuff says nothing. The rosy view of GS has no more evidence for it from what he did (negatively) than the opposite view. Obviously he did some things right and wrong, although in the end he was a Yankee fan's owner b/c he was one, hard core. Right now, I agree w/ bruner. S''s kids are being fiscally responsible, no question, but in the process also penny wise and pound foolish. The article-writer's right when he says that GS spent money to make it. He'd chafe at many of Hal's decisions, I have little doubt, not to mention Cashman's (who would probably have left for his notion of greener pastures by now--happily for us, but that's, of course, debatable). There just was no excuse, for example, not to go after and sign one or two of the Cubans, from Chapman to Moncada.

I hope that the Steinbrenners eventually sell to a multi-billionaire ownership group headed by someone like Mark Cuban. That would be the only way to challenge John Henry's billions, and those of the Dodgers, not to mention the TV wealth of every other team these days--and get some star-sized players back on the team--even just to become at least an interesting team if not a WS winner every year. For all of his mistakes, and he made many, esp. by precipitously trading away young players some of whom went on to better things, nevertheless he got players here who made the team riveting to watch more often than not. That, I miss about his ownership.
