Timely squeeze plays, steals, bunts and hustle.

Something we haven't seen when the team's offense struggled and lost close games.

The approach was HR or nothing

One reason we need change in managerial staff. Been 8 years under binder Joe. Unlikely to change no matter who we sign.

You have a point.  It ticked me off when Girardi suggested they didn't want Ellsbury and Gardner running because of the power hitters.  The Yankees were on fire with those two running.   It creates unforced errors and gets more fastballs for the middle of the order.

I know the Yankees' announcers mentioned that as a possibility, but apparently Joe isn't admitting it.

The Cubs can run on the Cards right now because their great defensive catcher, Yadier Molina, is playing hurt with a bad thumb, that he's trying to cover up. Maddon, being smart, decided to challenge him. Jackson can steals bases. Beyond that, you had Hendricks, the pitcher, sacrficing on an obvious NL pitcher bunts situation, which turns the inning into a big rally when the Cards' pitcher throws it away. A good squeeze bunt by Russell plates another, but the last two runs of the inning are guess what? A 2 run HR.

The Cards made 2 errors in the inning to help it along.

Again, to play smallball, you must have players who can play that style. In the Yankees lineup, Ellsbury is one such player. Gardner should be another, but he's a mediocre bunter and has become a mediocre basestealer. Didi is also a medoicre bunter and a mediocre basestealer.

Ellsbury and Gardner are brittle and on the wrong side of 30 to be stealing 50 bases. Diving back to first an extra 100 times as well as an additional 50 slides into 2nd ? Neither seems to stay on the field already. It might be fun...but I just don't see it happening with Ellsbury and Gardner.

Baron, I don't like him much, either, but he's a very good manager. And with the Cubs, he'll eventually have a complete team like he never had in Tampa.
