The New York Yankees plan to use their third new closer in the three years since Mariano Rivera retired. Heading into spring training next month, Joe Girardi said Monday that Aroldis Chapman will be his closer.

Girardi, appearing on the YES Network, said the hard-throwing lefty will be the closer as the team opens camp in February.

Girardi is going with the recently acquired Chapman, with Dellin Betances likely working the seventh inning and Andrew Miller the eighth. Depending on availability, there will be days when those roles shift.

Chapman might not be available for Opening Day, if MLB decides to levy a suspension after finishing its investigation into alleged acts of domestic violence. MLB has no timetable for a ruling on the Chapman case.

An extreme flame thrower pitching from the left side....that's should be uber protection for the short RF porch.

Chapman's FB has movement, tho. It's not a Kyle Farnsworth situation.

That's good... I was really worried Chapman was going to be Kyle Farnsworth 2.0. Thanks for putting those fears to rest.

You'd be surprised how many people will think that.

Chapman is a lefty, so that takes the RF porch pretty much out of consideration.  Chapman has allowed 17 home runs in his career, only 1 was hit to right field and 1 to right-center.  Also, of those 17, only 1 was hit by a LHB, Luke Scott.  However, it should be noted that the immortal Josh Willingham has one plate appearance versus Chapman, a towering home run.

Chapman's FB movement is actually less than a typical MLB 4 seam FB.  It's the speed that kills and the fact that it's from the left hand.
