Before his injury he was no doubt as advertised. I am more than happy w him and I hope he's here for the next 10 years. It's just a damn shame nobody can stay healthy anymore. Joba, Hughes, both showed promise of dominance and then injury. Same w Tanaka. Now Kapriellian. It's enough to drive ya nuts.

Its a shorter drive for some of us...

 Too bad Tanaka didn't have one on the right wing...    He hasn't had that same air of invincibility.

Why is Tanaka so criminally underrated by this fan base?

Hmm. I'd say it's because he gets paid like an ace, and he pitches like an ace about 1 game in 3, like a solid #3 starter about one game in 3, and a floundering #5 starter about 1 game in 3.

David Cone mentions Game Score every so often

23 starts this year: 9 very good starts (Game Score 64 and above), 7 solid starts (between 51 and 61), 7 mediocre/poor starts (44 and under).

===================================================

He's the 10th highest paid pitcher in MLB this year. Above him, Kershaw is hurt, Grienke pitched brilliantly after a very rough start, then he got hurt, Price is struggling, Verlander has been briliant in almost all of his starts since a terrible April, Felix Hernandez has been up and down, including an injury, CC had faded badly after a good start, Hamels and Scherzer have been outstanding all year, and almost everyone below him in the top 20 has been bad/hurt except Lackey and Zimmerman. So Tanaka isn't doing all that bad, compared to his peers.

It isn't that Tanaka is bad; it's that he hasn't been great when this team is counting on him to be great, added to the fact that the yo-yo offense has led to him getting a metric phluckton of no-decisions. (11 out of 23 starts are ND.)

I'd say he was vaguely disappointing, but actually, he's pitched fairly well.
