Why is Tanaka so criminally underrated by this fan base?
Hmm. I'd say it's because he gets paid like an ace, and he pitches like an ace about 1 game in 3, like a solid #3 starter about one game in 3, and a floundering #5 starter about 1 game in 3.
David Cone mentions Game Score every so often
23 starts this year: 9 very good starts (Game Score 64 and above), 7 solid starts (between 51 and 61), 7 mediocre/poor starts (44 and under).
===================================================
He's the 10th highest paid pitcher in MLB this year. Above him, Kershaw is hurt, Grienke pitched brilliantly after a very rough start, then he got hurt, Price is struggling, Verlander has been briliant in almost all of his starts since a terrible April, Felix Hernandez has been up and down, including an injury, CC had faded badly after a good start, Hamels and Scherzer have been outstanding all year, and almost everyone below him in the top 20 has been bad/hurt except Lackey and Zimmerman. So Tanaka isn't doing all that bad, compared to his peers.
It isn't that Tanaka is bad; it's that he hasn't been great when this team is counting on him to be great, added to the fact that the yo-yo offense has led to him getting a metric phluckton of no-decisions. (11 out of 23 starts are ND.)
I'd say he was vaguely disappointing, but actually, he's pitched fairly well.
True and every pitcher who make more then him is or has been great at one point in their MLB careers to get that contract.

That is definitely a problem though. This is professional sports and the bottom line has to be what have you done lately. Paying for past accomplishments especially in another uniform is a failing proposition

Before his elbow acted up he was damn near unhitfable and he's been pretty damn good since then overall too. 3.32 ERA this year should probably have about 15 wins. Career 3.22 ERA 17 games over .500 and he's just now going into his prime. Look at the money for pitchers going around, his is a more than fair contract for his production
He's a fragile pitcher that sucks when he doesn't have extra rest. Aces are supposed to be horses. He's being paid like an ace or #2 and he's producing like a #3.

I like tanaka. Criminally is a tad strong. Ask yourself how you feel about him in a big game. Last October he gave us exactly what I expected and it was a nice effort but hardly ace material. And this year it seems every time a big effort would help us he came up either small or average.
I agree Loon. He's good. Being paid to be great. No doubt the elbow is the reason.
That's exactly how I feel ... he's good, but being paid to be great ... perfect answer. I knew he was never going to be the same after the elbow issue.

The rest thing is what I can't understand, I know he was used to the six day rest in Japan, but you'd think after getting accustom to pitching on five days rest he'd adapt to it ?? I've said that if a team had the right staff a six man rotation would be good, but it seems no one is willing to try it at the ML level..

How can u be pitching like a #3 this season when your top ten in every important category pretty much for a SP NW?.. Does that mean everyone below him is a 4 or 5?

April - 2.87 ERA but only 1-0 May - 2.91 ERA but only 2-0 June - 2-2 4.12 ERA 2-2 July - 2.45 ERA but only 2-1 August 5.11 ERA so far but only 2 starts, one bad one, one great one. I'm really NOT seeing what Yankee fans who dislike him see..

Still trying to figure out what criminally underrated means? No one said he stinks, just the fact he pitches more like a 2/3 than ace. That is pretty much what the stats show. Prior to his start on Sunday he had given up 10 runs in 11 1/3 innings over his previous 2 starts. He has pockets of inconsistency and there have been issues when pitching on normal rest. He also averages about 6 and 1/3 innings per start which is ok but for an ace it would be nice getting 7 innings on average consistently. Fact is he is a good pitcher but not what was anticipated when he first signed on.

Stripes you are confusing the reality of recognizing him as what he is versus "hating" or "disliking" him. I've yet to see a single post where someone doesn't like him. Maybe I missed it.

Curious what pitchers average 7 innings per start? I mean if thats the qualification there are very few "Aces".
