Still trying to figure out what criminally underrated means? No one said he stinks, just the fact he pitches more like a 2/3 than ace. That is pretty much what the stats show. Prior to his start on Sunday he had given up 10 runs in 11 1/3 innings over his previous 2 starts. He has pockets of inconsistency and there have been issues when pitching on normal rest. He also averages about 6 and 1/3 innings per start which is ok but for an ace it would be nice getting 7 innings on average consistently. Fact is he is a good pitcher but not what was anticipated when he first signed on.
certainly not on the same level after the elbow issues but trying to figure out what an "ace" is. based on most pitching stats, this season he's top 10 in the AL (the NL is another story and he's certainly not a kershaw). given there's 15 teams, that puts him in pretty good company. if he was a 2/3, he'd rank 15-45 in the league. there isn't a pitcher in the AL this season who absolutely blows him away. kluber, hamels, happ? though the "impression" is otherwise, statwise he even matches up favorably with chris sale. people were screaming that we should have signed david price in the off-season. who would you rather have now. the rest thing is an issue this season only, as his splits the first 2 seasons are much closer. even recently his great game against the indians was on 4 days while his not so good start against the mets was on 5 days. so that doesn't always hold. in terms of innings/start, only sale averages 7/start. guy may not meet the high expecations held for him but he's pretty damn good.

This issue, according to Yankee sources, with Tanaka is the amount of rest between starts. What are the Yankees to do? I know Girardi, won't go to a 6 man rotation, but I would like to test it, because Tanaka is an ace pitcher and the post season is at stake.

12-4 3.11 ERA with a 1.082 WHIP in 179 innings, 4.7 WAR. and oh yeah, he's doing it in a division with THREE powerhouse offenses in Boston, Baltimore, and Toronto. Yes, criminally underrated to think he's a 2, let alone a freaking 3.

When Ford, Guidry (in prime years) Cone, Andy in a big spot took the mound, I felt real good that the Yankees were going to win that game. I just don't have that same kind of confidence in Tanaka. Not saying he's not a very good pitcher and he is certainly the best pitcher on this staff, I just don't see him as elite compared to some other elite pitchers. In fairness though I think pitching is down all over baseball, especially in the AL

the guy is 6th in innings pitched in the al, so despite the extra rest and being babied, he's getting his innings in. a horse like scherzer has only more start than tanaka and even he was just given an extra day. the trend is to take better care of pitchers.

13-4, 3.03 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP, 186 innings pitched 160K, pretty good #2 starter.

Pitched like an Ace today.

They certainly wouldn't be 3 games out of first place without Tanaka. His 186 innings is 6th in the AL. . .he's been a horse for the Yankees this year. He could be 4th or 5th in Cy Young voting, maybe higher depending on what happens the rest of the season. He'll never be what he was those first few months in 2014 but in this current era he is one of the best starting pitchers in the AL right now.

Post all star 6-2 2.89 ERA, that includes a horrible start against the Mets which skews that even more.
