he should have never even been in the game. They should have gone into the 9th with a 9-2 lead had they not left a small village of base runners stranded. Veterans , kids, this is an epedemic with this team of not taking advantage of scoring opportunities all year. They had 4 opportunities to add to their lead and failed miserably. True, Betance stunk it up, but he shouldn't bear the whole blame.

what's with parker hitting young on the top of the helmet with a curveball. that started the ball rolling. and actually it was papi's homer the previous inning that really started the whole thing. don't remember it being a terrible pitch but you can't let papi beat you in that situation.

Tanaka at 92 pitches? That is on Girardi . No way he can't give them at least 110 pitches . Betances, though is not a closer. He is a 7th or 8th innings guy and Cashman needs to address this in the off season. He is totally a different pitcher in the 9th , opposed to the 7th or 8th. Mariano, he never will be . Heck, he is not even David Robertson. But,also bad base running by the vets is unacceptable , making rookie like mistakes on the base paths . And leaving a village on base? Come on. And what is up with Warren? Honestly, he has been medicore since they got him back. They just gave the last 2 games on a silver platter to the Dodgers and Red Sox. And someone please pitch Ortiz inside ?

I like Betances. But we have seen, much to our detriment, that he cannot pitch 3 days in a row. Last night was his 3rd straight appearance. So, I give him the benefit of the doubt that he is being overused by Girardi. That said, I am appalled that Dellin cannot field his position, whether it is keeping a runner on base (100% stolen base chance against him?) or throw to home or 1st. How can this happen? How was this not corrected in the early part of his career? This does not bode well for him as a reliever if the opposing team is allowed to continue these exploits. Having watched every inning of last nights debacle, this is what has frustrated me with Girardi since he took over the team in 2008. Not certain what mental incapacity he has, but it rears its ugly head at the worst of times. This was a WON game Girardi lost. We accrued enough runs to win. Now it was about defense and pitching. Even putting in Mason Williams as a defensive replacement was odd. He looked like a deer in headlights in RF.

I think Betances is just overworked at this point, he's tied for the league lead in appearances and twice this month Girardi has run him out there three days in a row (the first time was when he got run up to 40 pitches and then Parker came in for his second career save) and it (surprise Joe!) hasn't worked either time. This one's on Clueless Joe Girardi (again) and his inability to put his other relievers in a position to succeed and give them regular work. Believe it or not the Yankees have a 13 man bullpen right now but Girardi can only seem to go to 4-5 guys regularly, so what's the point of expanding the roster if the manager doesn't know how to use them? This game was lost because for the last week or so he's just leaning on the same relievers every night. Even if the Yankees do make the post-season, this bullpen is going to be so fried (because again it's just the same 4-5 guys) that with the mediocre starting pitching they aren't going to go far anyway, as we're already seeing. If anything this run of success has messed up the plan from the beginning of August - maybe guys like Heller and Holder aren't ready, but now we're not even finding out because Girardi doesn't use them. And the go-to guys (most importantly Betances) are just going to burn out. I'm not saying the Yankees shouldn't try to clinch a post-season spot, but at the same time stick to your original plan and yet the young guys play and if they make it, great. If not, that's fine because we're building for next year anyway. It was going with the young guys (primarily Sanchez, but the other guys have had their moments) that put the Yankees in this position of contention, so just ride it out and let them play.
