he should have never even been in the game. They should have gone into the 9th with a 9-2 lead had they not left a small village of base runners stranded. Veterans , kids, this is an epedemic with this team of not taking advantage of scoring opportunities all year. They had 4 opportunities to add to their lead and failed miserably. True, Betance stunk it up, but he shouldn't bear the whole blame.
Tanaka at 92 pitches? That is on Girardi . No way he can't give them at least 110 pitches . Betances, though is not a closer. He is a 7th or 8th innings guy and Cashman needs to address this in the off season. He is totally a different pitcher in the 9th , opposed to the 7th or 8th. Mariano, he never will be . Heck, he is not even David Robertson.
But,also bad base running by the vets is unacceptable , making rookie like mistakes on the base paths . And leaving a village on base? Come on. And what is up with Warren? Honestly, he has been medicore since they got him back. They just gave the last 2 games on a silver platter to the Dodgers and Red Sox. And someone please pitch Ortiz inside ?
You're missing the point that you have a pitcher who has a suspect elbow, and Girardi said he was "gassed" If he keeps him in and he allows a run and 2 runners on base, Girardi would be second guessed also.

I was. I have just been reading and "lurking" and not posting for several years.

He threw 50 pitches the prior 2 games. I put it on Joe and his refusal to trust anyone other than Betances. He also gave the obvious explanation. "He's our best" so I guess that means run him ragged.

Who else that is remotely reliable would he use? I think Clippard and Warren weren't available and after that there's a huge drop off.

|
Clippard threw 14 pitches he wasn't available why?. Tanaka could have pitched the 8th with Warren taking the 9th. Severino? He's thrown 24 pitches in 3 days. . Hell what's wrong with Layne getting 2 more outs?. The length people will go to, to protect Girardi is insane and for what, what's he done outside of 2009 when he had an all star team?

Girardi trusts nobody in his pen or his rotation, he hasn't all year outside of miller, chapman and betances.

Can't say I blame him do you? As far as I am concerned right now the only ones I would have any confirdence in is Layne, Clippard and Betances. Warren is up and down and you can see why the Cubs traded him back.

Bingo. And BTW for all you Refsnyder fans, the last 2 games he has come up with a runner on third and less than 2 outs 3 times and has struck out all 3 times including twice last night. Kind of reminds me of Headley, another guy that does similar. If these guys just put the freakin bat on the ball last night we woul dhave had 3 more runs.
|
|
And by the way how many more bad base running plays with guys getting thrown at at the plate will it take to find a real 3B coach? Sending Headley in the 8th was a complete joke just like getting Gardner thrown out at home plate by 10 feet on a triple to lead off a game recently and so forth. It has been a mess all year.

Yes I wanna blame the 1st base umpire, Ramirez went around on the 2-1 slider out of the zone and he called a check swing just to cause drama and make the game more interesting. Typical umpire that doesn't care about calling the game right even though we are working hard trying to get a playoff spot. Betances was forced to throw a 3-1 fastball over the plate and Hanley took him deep to end the game.
