They say that Seattle is the best fit for Ellsbury, being that he lives near the area and would likely waive his NTC. That location is the best and first place to start with. Gosh, I hate the idea that the Yankees are willing to eat half of that contract. Whoever's idea was it to sign Ellsbury, in the first place, should be the one to fit that bill. Once the Mariners got Gordon, that pretty much killed all hopes of unloading Ellsbury there.

They should let him know they appreciate what he has done for the team, and they really feel that he can still be an everyday center fielder. But, it can't be with the Yankees , since they already have too many outfielders with not enough spots to fill. Make it clear to him that he would be a bench player who just spots starts, pinch hits and pinch runs and he deserves to be on a team that will allow him an opportumity to play everyday. Then , you ask him which teams he would go to. After that , eat as much of the remaining deal and move on. No more NTC to anyone .

As far as if Els would waive his no trade clause, he knows that he has two choices. Stay with the Yankees on the bench or be in the line up every day for another team. Ellsbury is the 8th highest paid outfielder in baseball with a remaining average annual value of $22,809,524 when you factor in the 2021 buyout. Last season he was a 1.6-1.7 WAR but is 34 years old and projected to be a part time 0.3 WAR next year. I think we have to eat a lot more than half or really sweeten the deal.

That's Brett Gardner money. There are only 21 outfielders in baseball making that much and they are all better than Ellsbury. The average is less than $4 million. Sometimes teams will over pay for a name, is he a draw off of name recognition?
