Notice I didn't say "best".

I'd have to think about it a lot longer to come up with top 3, but I'm sure the list would include just about any Beatles album from Rubber Soul up to and including Abbey Road (excluding White Album & Yellow Submarine). Any of the first 4 Byrds albums (Tambourine Man, Turn Turn Turn, 5th Dimension & Younger Than Yesterday)...maybe My Generation & A Quick One (Who)...maybe an Animals album (Animalism)...maybe a Rascals album...

Much later stuff..."So" (Peter Gabriel) / "The Way It Is" (Bruce Hornsby) / "Songs From The Big Chair" (Tears For Fears)...

Monster - Steppenwolf

Title song, Monster, is the album.

The Pretender -  Jackson Browne

Daddy's Song and The Fuse are the highlights

Garden of Joy - Jim Kweskin Jug Band

Jackson Browne is great. Saw him a few times before he hit it big.

Younger Than Yesterday is a great album, as are all of The Byrds' early albums. Interesting you didn't mention Sweetheart Of the Rodeo.

Byrds...frankly not a fan of the Gram Parsons era.

But...here ya go...

Did you ever go to The Bottom Line? Great small venue. Saw Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell, among others, there. My favorite place for music in NY.

No. I was in SoCal then...Troubador.

Saw lots of good bands earlier at "House of Liverpool" in Yonkers.

Too many Beatles albums have one or two stupid novelty tracks that disqualify the album from making my favorites list. Take Abbey Road for example. I cannot include in my favorites list an album which includes Maxewll's Silver Hammer AND Octopuss's Garden. Sgt. Pepper I just flat out don't like (with a few exceptions -- A Day In the Life, Within You Without You, A Little Help From My Friends).

I don't discount those albums for the reasons you mentioned. Every album by every band has junk / filler. I can't think of any album that I love every song.

As for The Who, it's Who's Next for me.

As much of a garage rock fan as you are, surprised you're not a fan of the earlier, cruder Who stuff.

I am! But Won't Get Fooled Again sucks me in... And I can't believe I left out The Ramones. Their s/t debut gets all the ink, but my favorite is Rocket to Russia.

You mentioned earlier LZ becoming a "different" band.

Same can be said of The Who...even more so IMO.

I'd like to go back to a band we both feel strongly about -- The Byrds. I know you've said you're not a fan of the Gram Parsons era. I'd be interested in hearing what your three favorite Byrds songs are. Mine are I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better (I have a feeling you're gonna agree with that one; in any event, it is by far my favorite Byrds song), You Don't Miss Your Water and Deportee (which, interestingly, Gene Clark also recoded in a duet after he left the band; I'm not sure who of the two recorded it first).

My all-time favorite is "My Back Pages", followed closely by "Turn Turn Turn".

"Here Without You" / "Bells of Rhymney" / "We'll Meet Again" / "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" /"He Was A Friend of Mine" / "Wild Mountain Thyme" /  and yes... ""I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better"...all great IMO.
