Verlander + Cole or Gray + Happ. Steinbrenner: "We can't spend that much!" Cashman: "Okay, well, Happ and Gray have better fWARs than those two anyway."

I think the big question, I know it is in my mind, how many think Hal/Hank will spend what it takes to get Cole ?? Is there any question that he's the pitcher to go after ?? Sure it's going to cost a lot of money, sure the Yankees are going to pay some luxury tax with his signing, but in another year they have some very bad contracts coming off the books... Do they sacrifice one year of a higher luxury tax to land a pitcher with Coles talent ??

Verlander came down to money, but lets not rewrite history on Cole. The Yankees went after him but the Pirates picked an inferior package of prospects from the Astros. Cole was also not the ACE that he is now at the time of the trade. In 2016 and 2017 he pitched to a combined 4 ERA with less than a K per inning and a 1.3 WHIP. Anyone who is trying to pretend that they "knew" he was going to turn into this at the time of the trade is full of it. Finally, look at what Gray is doing right now in Cinci. He couldn't handle NY. There's no way to know that until a guy shows up here.

Still ignoring the facts of either one of those deals and why they weren't done , but that's typical of your beating a dead horse posts.

Those deals should have been done. And we are witnessing the fruits of those SMART deals first hand and it's gonna cost us yet another pennant.

Okay Mr second guessing , should have, could have, explain how those deals should have been done. This explanation should be hilarious.

I'm surprised you know how to spell the word "smart".

Elementary. Trade Fowler, Mateo, and Kapriellan for Verlander and absorb most of his contract, more than what the Tigers were offering. For Cole, trade Justus Sheffield and the same mid level prospects the Astros did to the Pirates. Tell me, how are those guys doing for the Pirates today? The Pirates still stink. Both Verlander and Cole could have been had without giving up Gleber Torres.

Cashman is looking the opposite of smart for bringing in bums like Gray, Stanton, Ellbsury, and Paxton who all couldn't perform under pressure.

Those deals were not realistic at the time but thanks for second guessing .
