But even among those who kept a more open mind about Jones, there was a popular sentiment that if the Giants were truly infatuated with Duke's quarterback, they could easily get him with the No. 17-overall pick - After all, he'd still be there by then. And surely, he'd be at least the third quarterback taken after Murray and Haskins.

"I’m like ‘Are they really gonna take Daniel Jones over Dwayne Haskins?'", recalled Biddle. "'Yeah, Daniel Jones, solid quarterback, he might be a really good NFL quarterback – but he’s not gonna be Dwayne Haskins.’ That’s what I was thinking."

Behind the scenes, that was far less of a foregone conclusion: According to Rowe, the Miami Dolphins were planning to take Jones with at least the No. 13-overall pick. In a report by the Washington Post, it was later revealed that the Washington Redskins' coaching staff had preferred Jones with the No. 15-overall pick, though they ended up being overruled by team owner Dan Snyder. It should also be noted that the Denver Broncos, the possessors of the No. 10-overall pick, were also actively in the quarterback market.

"We were told leading up to the Draft and afterwards, if he wasn’t picked by the Giants, he was gonna be picked by somebody in the Top 10," said Rowe. "There were teams, evidently, that were ready to trade up."

On the night of the first round in Nashville, Tennessee, the first five picks of the Draft went about as expected: Kyler Murray was selected No. 1-overall by Arizona, while Nick Bosa went second to the San Francisco 49ers. Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams went third to the New York Jets, followed by the first real surprise of the Draft in Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell (fourth-overall, Oakland Raiders). Once the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted LSU linebacker Devin White fifth-overall, it was time for the Giants to go on the clock.

Many watching the draft, whether on TV or in-person, were preparing for the Giants to fill their need for a pass rusher and draft Kentucky's Josh Allen. Others, surely, were prepared for the Giants to draft Haskins. Few, except for those with their ears truly planted to the pavement, were prepared for Daniel Jones to be picked sixth-overall.

But he did. And with the utterance of Jones' name by commissioner Roger Goodell, chaos ensued.
