15 K's is impressive. 15 K's with no walks is even more impressive.

A quick inquiry at Baseball Reference shows 286 games in MLB history of 15 strikeouts or more by a pitcher.

Of these, in just 55 did the pitcher allow no walks.

The three Yankees who have done it are Cole, Masahiro Tanaka and...

...Michael Pineda. Actually Pineda struck out 16 in his game.

All three went exactly 7 innings. All three were done between 2015 and last night.

========================

There are 6 games in MLB history where the pitcher struck out 20 batters or more. There's the famous Tom Cheney game in 1962 where he struck out the still-record total of 21 batters in one game, but it took him 16 innings to it. (Imagine that, a complete 16-inning game for the win.)

The other five struck out exactly 20 and walked none. Rogers Clemens in 1986 and again in 1996, Kerry Wood in 1998 (a 1 hit shutout, no less). Randy Johnson in 2001, and Max Scherzer in 2016 (although Max also gave up 2 solo HR in that complete game win). Johnson was the only one of the six not to have a complete game and get the win, leaving after 9 with his 20 K's and the game tied at 1, though the Diamonbacks rallied for 3 in the 11th to win 4-3.

Cole was masterful last night.  The true ace we need.
