Pete Rose rips into Joey Gallo after Yankees’ playoff disappointment

by: Jeremy Layton New York Post

Pete Rose is clearly not a fan of the newest Yankee.

After the Bronx Bombers were bounced in the AL Wild Card game by the Red Sox, the MLB’s all-time hit leader launched into a tirade against the Yankees – which quickly turned into a tirade against trade-deadline acquisition Joey Gallo.

“That was the worst f–king lineup they could have put on the field,” Rose said to USA Today, per NESN. “Their 6, 7, 8, 9 hitters were all out-men. They had to have (Aaron) Judge and (Giancarlo) Stanton do something. If they didn’t, all of the pressure was on Joey Gallo. You saw how that worked out.

“How does someone who didn’t play every day strike out 213 times? Ray Charles wouldn’t strike out that much. I just can’t imagine striking out 213 times without killing myself.”

The Yankees traded for Gallo from the Rangers at the deadline, sending four prospects to Texas in exchange for the slugger. While he did hit 13 home runs in the 58 games he was in New York, he hit .160 in 188 at bats. In the Wild Card game, he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the Yankees’ 6-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Gallo is under contract for another year before he hits unrestricted free agency in 2022. His contract only costs $9.5 million next season and his lefty bat adds variety to the Yankees’ righty-heavy lineup.

Rose knows a thing or two about hitting in the postseason – though he is still banned from the Hall of Fame since he was caught betting on games while he was a/manager.

It's strange though because he's also saying you have to rely on Judge.   Whose best season by far was 2017, when he played in 2 more games than Gallo did in 2021 - and also struck out 208 times.

I don't care if Gallo strikes out 300 times.   I'd just like to see him hit 40+ home runs, walk over 100 times, and try and hit over .240/.250.

This season Judge put up really good numbers and cut his K's down to 157. IMO, Gallo is no where near close to being the hitter Judge is and a player who in my opinion doesn't make the team better. The negatives outweigh the positives. I can't think of a ML hitter I'd least like to see at the plate with a runner in scoring position and less than two outs.

Not meant as an excuse, but probably played into Nevin's decision to send Judge.

His best year was 2017, proof that you can strike out over 200 times and still be great.

He should not have been that high in the order in the middle of a slump.   But look at what was hitting behind him.    The team was banged up (plus Gary needs to sit because Cole won't work with him) and had garbage for more than 1/2 of the order in that game.

uh in 2017 judge hit 52 HR w 114 RBI .284 BA 1.049 OPS and 127 walks. plus he did that while being in a dreadful slump where he hit .184 over over 50 games. he was hitting .330 at the ASB. let me know when gallo comes anywhere near that. gallo's career BA is just above .200. and yeah 40 HRs and 300 Ks, that's something to shoot for.

if he can be traded and bring back some value, i'd be thrilled. if not, i'd be happy w a season like he was having w texas before the trade - which is what they're hoping for and expected. as i said a number of times, he can be pitched to. i never feared him but he can feast on the lesser teams.

I'm not saying he's the same as Judge, I am saying it's possible to strike out over 200 times and still have an incredible, impactful year offensively.

Gallo was on a projection (had he played the same number of games as Judge) for a 7.3 WAR, hitting .248 with 48 home runs and 115 walks in 2019.   That is fantastic, star-level production.   It's Thome-like, with excellent defense added in.

Gallo was also in a dreadful slump after being traded this year and no one is giving him a pass for it.

But he wasn't great.
