Mets close to finalizing a 3 year 120M deal for Scherzer

What a world. 40 mil a year for one pitcher who is 37 crazy

the money is off the hook. scherzer still seems to be at the top of his game but i wouldn't be spendng $120 mil on a 37 yr old pitcher. depending on degrom's health, these two would be very tough in the post-season.

I think it is a good signing for the Mets. The Mets will sell enough tickets to make up the Scherzer salary. They've grabbed the back pages from the Yankees ,the Knicks, the Giants and the Jets. The investment is significant, but it pales when compared to the gamble the Yankees have on Gerrit Cole. Three years, $120 M does not bind the team in a way the Lindor deal does. Good deal for both sides.

No....that never happens. That's what practically every team says, but it never happens. Mets (diehard) fans will always go to the games or watch it on first, but the mere presence of Scherzer will not increase ticket sales to offset that 40+mil salary. The Mets added Francisco Lindor to their team.....did that do anything? No. The Mets will have to prove that they can contend first. Pales in comparison to Gerrit Cole? Cole is cheaper and contract value is better (by alot). Cole will be 37 years old when the 36 mil/yr contract ends. Scherzer will play 1/2 of the 2022 season as a 38 year old man. How can that pale in comparison? Cole is an elite pitching, who practically 7 years younger than Scherzer?

I would have loved for the Yankees to have signed Scherzer, but not for 3 years. I would not have mind the 43 million per year,.......but only for 1 year. Pitching-wise, the Yankees are fine and set. With a rotation consisting of Cole, Severino (finally!), German, and Montgomery.....I'm cool with that. Don't get me wrong, there can always be improvement but, at this point -in December-, we are just talking numbers here. The *REAL* improvement comes in July before the trade deadline. Signing Scherzer is always going to be a good move, but at his age......to risky.

36 year old Scherzer was much better than the 30 year old Cole this year

That would be a huge overpay for a 37 year old pitcher.

Scherzer is "too risky" but Severino, that bastion of health, and German aren't?

How'd Verlander do at 35 and 36?
