Crazy money but is it any dumber than giving a guy like Hicks a 7 year contract?

Hicks has a shot at making his contract look good. $10 mil a year isn't a lot of money for a MLB CF.

$32.5 mil AAV is a lot for any position.

He is a lifetime .233 hitter. He has played over 100 games only twice in his entire career. His performance has been on a down trend the last 3 years and he has 4 years left on this absurd contract. He has no shot at making this contract look good. This is the problem with this team. People keep waiting for Hicks to do something. 6 years into his career in NY and still waiting. Good luck. Listen no player is worth the money Seager got but at least he is star player and produces.

Seager is 28.   I think if Barry Bonds was 28 now and was given the same contract, and if he performed the same as he did from 28-38, he'd be an absolute steal.

Is it also absurd that the Twins just extended Buxton for 7 years and 100 million?   He's only topped 100 games once in his career.

Bonds was a roid head, he didn't need them but who knows what his true number would've been without PEDs.

OK then would a 28 year old Jeter be worth that same deal?

Why are you comparing a hitter that is in nowhere near the same league to Jeter?  Yeah a 28 year old Jeter is worth a stupid contract because he had already helped the Yankees win 4 world championships.  Corey Seager is often injured so who knows how his body will hold up, giving him 10 years is just stupid.

I am really questioning the idea that no player is worth that kind of contract, because some do come along who are worth it.

Bonds would have been worth it because roids or not, he knew how not to get caught and he produced.

I'm not saying no player is not worth a stupid mega contract but those types of deals used to be reserved for players that were putting up future HoF stats.  Are players like Marcus Semien and Corey Seager and soon to be getting mega contract Carlos Correa future HoFers?  With the stats that they aren't putting up, no they aren't.  So why are teams paying them like they are?

Earlier Bruner had said:  "Listen no player is worth the money Seager got but at least he is star player and produces."

There are some who are worth it.   I've already seen two 10 years deals succeed for the Yankees in Winfield and Jeter.   The tricky part is knowing ahead of time who's going to stand up to the test of time.

Seager and Correa could be HOF'ers one day but it's too early to tell with either one.   They're getting crazy money because they hit free agency at early ages and both produce a lot at a premium position.   Semien is more a case of cashing in after just two big years because the rest of his career is nice, but nothing all that special.

Seager would be more understandable if he didn't have an injury history.  But the Rangers are taking a huge risk banking on him to remain healthy,  its an expensive and long term gamble.

Obviously the money is there to pay those salaries. The owners must feel that they will be making more money with unhappy players, but the game will suffer, just watch. Greed kills all it touches.

I really don't understand these players who take huge deals then cry a year afterwards because their team sucks.  It happens all the time, they should just take the best offer from a play-off contending team to avoid such misery and it's not like they won't be able to live off it.

Isn't greed one of the seven deadly sins? That's the player's problem, but owners are even worse.

You are right. Everyone at the table is better off than 99% of the fans. The good news is that the same greed that caused the lockout will eventually bring everyone back to the playing field. The bad news is that people least able to afford it are likley to get pay the tab for the new deal.

We tend to forget that playing professional sports is a job and, for most, a short-lived one. Sure, it’d be a nice bonus to have a championship ring, but the primary objective is to earn as much in the short period they have to do so. Fans shouldn’t expect players to sacrifice income for our entertainment.

You're right, I was never mad at Cano for signing with the M's, like some Yankee fans were.
