Yankees Release Chris Gittens; Gittens Expected To Pursue NPB Opportunity

The Yankees have released Chris Gittens, according to the MLB.com transactions tracker. Lindsey Adler of the Athletic reports (on Twitter) that the hulking first baseman is likely to pursue an opportunity with a team in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. The move opens a spot on New York’s 40-man roster, which now sits at 39.

This kind of move isn’t uncommon for players on the fringes of a 40-man roster. Teams in South Korea or Japan are often willing to put forth a loftier guaranteed salary than players like Gittens would receive shuttling between the majors and Triple-A. Assuming he’s indeed signing with an NPB club, Gittens is likely to find himself in a more financially stable situation than he’d have been in with the Yankees.

Gittens, 28 in February, earned his first brief big league look this past season. He only tallied 44 MLB plate appearances and didn’t perform especially well, but he had an otherworldly year with their top affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Over 184 trips to the plate at the minors’ top level, the right-handed hitter mashed at a .301/.440/.644 clip with 14 homers. Given that dominant run against high level pitching, it’s easy to understand why he caught the attention of evaluators in foreign pro leagues.

It’s not out of the question Gittens makes a return to the U.S. over the coming seasons. Eric ThamesMerrill KellyMiles Mikolas and Josh Lindblom are a few fairly recent examples of former big leaguers who raised their stocks with strong showings in Asian professional leagues. Those players all returned to the U.S. on guaranteed big league deals later in their careers. That’s not to say it’s a given every one-time major leaguer will have that kind of success, but it’s also not out of the realm of possibility Gittens follows a similar path.

Timing a bit strange and I won't pretend to understand manipulating the 40 man roster, but why not just release him a week ago when we were scrambling for spots? Does the guy we just signed who played for the Mets require a 40 man spot?

The rules for the 40 man roster is not an easy read. Yes, every team needs to follow the rules. With vacancies created by the departures of Syndegaard, Baez and free agent Conforto there are spots for the guys the Mets signed.

Hopefully Gittens gets a big pile of yen playing in Japan. I always root for ex-Yankees to do well.

Which begs the question:  why keep Gittens only to release him and lose Wade?  Now Wade as a starter for more than a day here and a day there is definitely something you do not want.  But he had (very inexpensive) value as a utility guy and pinch runner.

Um... huh?

Apples and oranges. Gittens is a DH posing as a 1B. Wade is a superutility guy.

That was my point.  Gittens had almost no value while Wade clearly did.   They hung onto Gittens for a week then released him forcing them to release Wade.

I think Cashman made it clear that his assessment of Wade varies significantly from ours. Our GM had a love affair with home runs from youth and collected a data analysis team to support his opinions. Someday it could work.

which is why it is a bit surprising he did not go after Baez, a guy with worse than leagure average K and swing and miss rates but who hit the ball a long way when he did connect.

Another one of Cashman's inexplicable moves. He is releasing players he held on to with white knuckles for years, now dumping them for nothing. He is grossly overrated as a GM.

I think much of this is about the money and the intention of the owners to put a hard cap on the payrolls of the big market teams...Even if it means raising the salary floor and easing the restirctions on free agency. As long as their is a cap on salaries, I think the owners would be happy to give in on a lot of other issues.
