Supreme Court limits review of factual disputes in immigration cases

Washington (CNN)The Supreme Court has ruled against a Georgia man who has spent decades in the US and faces deportation after checking the wrong box on a driver's license application.

The ruling made it more difficult for non-citizens who are in removal proceedings to get a federal court to review factual determinations that were made by an immigration court concerning relief from deportation.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the decision for 5-4 court. Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the dissent for himself with the three liberal justices.

Pankajkumar S. Patel, a citizen of India, entered the US unlawfully in 1992 and was seeking to become a lawful permanent resident. In 2008, while his petition to adjust his status was pending, he checked a box on a driver's license renewal application falsely maintaining that he was a US citizen. He was later charged with making a false statement.

No, mostly the 6 radical right-wing activist judges on the SC limited the review of disputes in immigration cases.  These 6 radical judges have made it very clear that they are supportive of a caste system in this country: MAKING THE 18TH CENTURY GREAT AGAIN.

Did you even read the majority opinion?  It says clearly that Congress has limited their authority to hear these cases.

The radical rw sc justices have CHOSEN to limit their authority in this matter.  In other cases, they have CHOSEN to expand their authority.

Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court justice, pressed Ariz. lawmakers to help reverse Trump's loss

Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, the conservative activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, pressed Arizona lawmakers after the 2020 election to set aside Joe Biden’s popular-vote victory and choose “a clean slate of Electors,” according to emails obtained by The Washington Post. The emails, sent by Ginni Thomas to a pair of lawmakers on Nov. 9, 2020, argued that legislators needed to intervene because the vote had been marred by fraud. Though she did not mention either candidate by name, the context was clear.

Just days after media organizations called the race for Biden in Arizona and nationwide, Thomas urged the lawmakers to “stand strong in the face of political and media pressure.” She told the lawmakers the responsibility to choose electors was “yours and yours alone” and said they have “power to fight back against fraud.” Thomas sent the messages via an online platform designed to make it easy to send pre-written form emails to multiple elected officials, according to a review of the emails obtained under the state’s public records law.

The messages show that Thomas, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, was more deeply involved in the effort to overturn Biden’s win than has been previously reported. In sending the emails, Thomas played a role in the extraordinary scheme to keep Trump in office by substituting the will of legislatures for the will of voters. Thomas’s actions also underline concerns about potential conflicts of interest that her husband has already faced — and may face in the future — in deciding cases related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

Those questions intensified in March, when The Post and CBS News obtained text messages that Thomas sent in late 2020 to Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, pressing him to help reverse the election. The emails were sent to Russell Bowers, a veteran legislator and speaker of the Arizona House, and Shawnna Bolick, who was first elected to the chamber in 2018 and served on the House elections committee during the 2020 session. “Article II of the United States Constitution gives you an awesome responsibility: to choose our state’s Electors,” read the Nov. 9 email. “… [P]lease take action to ensure that a clean slate of Electors is chosen.”

Clarence Thomas needs to recuse himself from any cases involving the January 6th insurrection.  There should be no question about his duty to do so.

As SCOTUS is supposed to  uphold the constitution and not guided by politics  it's  clear Thomas doesn't shy away viewing himself as the protector of those radical conservatives.  And that is his priority..constitution be damn...

Keeping dreaming if anyone thinks Thomas will recuse himself. Critical mass is present allowing him to speak for conservative's behalf

If these zealots get their wish, then I am all for women withholding sex. No more sleeping with the enemy, as it were. Get a gun, take classes on protection and proper handling. Practice, and protect yourself from would-be rapists, once they become agressive and hardup.

Oh, and vote for those that would protect your rights. You know, definitely NOT the RepubliCON party.

I will mourn for those 12 and 13 year olds forced to carry to term, their rapist offspring. We know these religious zealots want all pregnancy to be upheld. Even incest and rape. Hope they reap what they sow, and cosmic karma hits them where it hurts most. GOP defending the sa ct

Rapist/incest??? Don't waste tax payers money. Castrate them and set them free to pay child support as women are forced to carry to term.

Dead beat fathers better watch out. Your days of a free ride is over. A brigade of angry electorates will hunt you down to garnish a huge chunk of your money. Those phoney religious conservatives with a piece on the side better be careful.  That sweet young thing is coming to upset the apple cart.

Conservatives are only interested in the 9 months of gestation. After that you're on your own... GOPs defending the sanctity of life? Give me a break.. where were they to defend Sandy Hook massacre when their primary interest is guns and more guns. And let's not minimizing their lack of interest in covid vaccinations as they choose death.

Nothing but a bunch of phoney moralistic hypocrites. It's a ruse to eliminate women's  autonomy to have traditional gender roles.

I think there's a reason this hasn't come to fruition.

I think it's a can of worms that interferes wih a woman's autonomy.  Many don't want partners.  Involve the men financially, and then some lawsuit pops up that they want visitation, a financial say in the upbringing, etc....  Even a yay/nay over the abortion, or more.

Laws are funny like that.

For what it's worth, I agree with you, and I'd take it a step or three further (I wont get into that yet).
