The story behind Yankees’ four-finger celebration has been revealed — and it’s awesome

Brett Gardner

In 2017, the Yankees’ thumbs-down celebration became a rally gesture and a good-natured mocking of a fan who was caught on TV cameras flashing the sign in stone-serious disapproval.

In 2021, they had a new symbol — a fist to their elbow, sort of like how Larry Johnson would celebrate with the Knicks in the late-90s. The story behind that has yet to surface.

But on Wednesday, former Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier revealed the backstory to why players would flash four fingers back to their dugout to celebrate in 2019.iFrame Removed

And, honestly, it’s pretty great.

The quick and dirty version is this: A Yankees front office member, according to Frazier, would hold up four fingers to signal how many eggs he wanted to food-service employees during breaking at spring training at Steinbrenner Field. The front office member, Frazier said, wouldn’t address the workers by name or even say anything else. He’d just hold up his fingers. So, Yankees players were calling him out on it.

Here’s Frazier’s full quote, which came from his appearance on the “Short Porch” podcast from Barstool Sports:

“We had a person in the front office that would walk into — so, like, in the cafeteria in spring training, we would all eat breakfast in this one area and it would be like, if you were a Yankees employee that’s on the training staff, strength coach, players, front office, you’re eating there. You can go in.

“He walked in — and these guys have names, by the way, that are making our breakfast food. He never said their names. He would just walk in, straight up, and just go (motions with four fingers). That was his way (of saying) that he wanted four eggs, scrambled. That was it. Nothing else. Just like, ‘Hey, four.’

“So I know the ‘four’ was created afterward because it was like, hold on. One of the players was like, ‘That needs to be addressed.’ So for the rest of the year, this is going to remind you that that guy has a name and you can call him by him by his name if you want eggs.’”

Guess the egg was on that guy’s face, after all.

Wish the Yankees would fire that guy, the money that pays them is the same money that pays him.
