KEY POINTS

  • The select House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot has received more than 700 pages of Trump White House documents that it had sought for the past several months.
  • The panel received the records from the National Archives less than two days after the Supreme Court refused a request from former President Donald Trump to block their release.
  • Trump had unsuccessfully argued in lower federal courts that he was entitled to keep the documents secret under executive privilege, which in certain cases allows presidents to prevent Congress from obtaining executive branch records.
  • President Joe Biden had refused to invoke executive privilege over the documents. A federal appeals court said that even if Trump was a sitting president he would not have the power to keep the House committee from getting the records via a subpoena.

The select House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot has received more than 700 pages of Trump White House documents that it had sought for the past several months, NBC News reported Friday.

The panel received the records from the National Archives less than two days after the Supreme Court refused a request from former President Donald Trump to block their release.

The House committee is investigating the days leading up to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, the events during it, and its aftermath.

The riot by a mob of Trump supporters, who invaded the halls of Congress that day, began after weeks of false claims by Trump that he had actually won the 2020 election, and that President Joe Biden’s official victory was the result of widespread ballot fraud.

Trump had unsuccessfully argued in lower federal courts that he was entitled to keep the documents secret under executive privilege, which in certain cases allows presidents to prevent Congress from obtaining executive branch records.

Biden had refused to invoke executive privilege over the documents.

A federal appeals court said that even if Trump was a sitting president he would not have the power to keep the House committee from getting the records via a subpoena.

The Supreme Court earlier this week noted that fact as it refused to issue an injuction against the records being released to give Trump a chance to get the high court to take his appeal.

Anybody who is still supporting and repeating The Big Lie, denying that 1/6 was an insurrection, and participating in any of the organizing groups that planned or carried out the violence, including members of Congress, are aiding and abetting traitors.

Read the never-issued Trump order that would have seized voting machines

Thanks for the interesting article.  I find it interesting that Trump's confidants drafted this order to seize voting machines but it never came to be.  Is it possible that Trump reviewed it and said "this is over the top" and decided not to do it.

As far as the Remarks on National Healing, I wish Trump would have issued these remarks on January 7th.  They probably would have gone a long way towards helping to bring the nation together.  Even if he still believed or believes the election was rigged, it would have been good closure to say that he's fought every fight but now it's over.

These two documents are great examples of how history may have changed based on a few pieces of paper left in the recycle bin.

And the Traitor-in-Chief is Donald Trump himself...

The riot on 1/6 was not an insurrection.  An insurection against one of the largest governments on earth would need to be accompanied with a significant amount of planning and weapons.  These rioters had neither.  In fact, they were less prepared than the rioters who marched on the White House or in several cities around the U.S. in the summer.

There has been a recent addition of a charge of "sedition" to a few of the leaders of the groups that were present at the riot, despite the fact that even left-leaning legal experts question the ability of prosecutors to move forward with such a charge.  I suppose it's good for headlines, but it's not likely to result in a guilty verdict.

Every person who breached the Capitol on 1/6 should be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  They knew what they were doing was wrong and they knew their limits should have been the steps of the Capitol.  If evidence comes out that Trump, Jim Jordan, Oprah, or anyone else was complicit in a plan to breach the Capitol, they should also be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  My feelings on that haven't changed since day one.  However, claiming that this riot was an insurrection is patently false.

That's quite a departure from your original position that "every person who breached the Capitol on 1/6" should've been shot on the spot.

At least you're making an attempt to sound objective...albeit flimsy & transparent.

he's probably just posting his last response to get a "reaction" or perhaps his initial post of "shooting them" was posted for just a "reaction." Never know what this guy actually believes.
