Yankees sign infielder Matt Carpenter

The New York Yankees announced on Thursday that they have signed three-time All-Star infielder to a Major League contract and added him to the active roster.

Carpenter, 36, has batted .262 (1,153-for-4,403) with 752R, 301 doubles, 28 triples, 155HR, 576RBI, 699BB and 27SB in 1,329 games over parts of 11 Major League seasons, all with the St. Louis Cardinals (2011-21). The left-handed hitter has appeared defensively at third base (671G/623GS), first base (333G/254GS), second base (246G/229GS), right field (19G/11GS) and left field (7G/3GS) in his career.

In 21 games with Triple-A Round Rock in the Texas Rangers organization this season, Carpenter batted .275 (22-for-80) with 15R, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 6HR, 19RBI, 14BB and 1SB before being released on May 19. He was signed by Texas to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League spring training on March 19. In 2021, Carpenter batted .169 (35-for-207) with 18R, 11 doubles, 1 triple, 3HR, 21RBI, 35BB and 2SB in 130 games with the Cardinals, appearing defensively at second base (34G/29GS), first base (14G/9GS) and third base (6G/4GS).

An All-Star in 2013-14 and ’16, Carpenter ranks among Cardinals all-time leaders in walks (sixth), doubles (13th), home runs (13th) and extra-base hits (13th, 484). In 2013, he finished fourth in the NL MVP voting and won the NL Silver Slugger award at second base after recording a Major League-leading 126R and 55 doubles, while batting .318 (199-for-626) with 7 triples, 11HR, 78RBI and 72BB in 157 games. Over a six-year span from 2013-18, he led the Majors in doubles (241) and ranked second runs scored (609, second in NL). He collected at least 100 runs scored in three of those seasons (2013, ’15 and ’18), one of only nine players to accomplish the feat over that span.

In 166 career games against American League opponents, Carpenter has batted .304/.400/.556 (178-for-585) with 110R, 47 doubles, 5 triples, 30HR, 97RBI and 85BB. His .469 (30-for-64) career batting average with the bases loaded is currently the second-best in the Majors since 1974.

Carpenter has appeared in the playoffs six times in his career (2012-15, ’19-20), batting .228 (36-for-158) with 24R, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 6HR, 21RBI and 17BB in 50 career postseason games. He made the Cardinals’ 2021 NL Wild Card roster but did not play.

The Galveston, Tex., native was originally selected by the Cardinals in the 13th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas Christian University.

Hope that doesn't mean there's something more serious than a sore wrist with DJ.

Or maybe they are just looking for a left handed hitter that can actually hit (not Gallo)...

I Know he is an infielder, but hitting seems to be their achilles heel (sorry Stanton) right now.

Life is better when the Yankees win !

Well, that's the point...he's an infielder. Yanks have (had?) and abundance of infielders, including a very versatile one in DJ. It's outfielders they need. Is he gonna DH? Doubtful.*

Guess we'll find out what's up soon.

Before the Yankees signed Carpenter, they had 5 infielders who could start for 4 infield positions. Does that signing mean that Donaldson or Torres is going to get traded?

I would say they're more concerned DJs wrist injury is more serious than first thought and are preparing for a IL atint.

From what I read Greg Bird is heating up in SWB. Unless he can only play 1B, I wonder if Yankees had  any consideration to utilize his service.

He had his 7 game hitting streak stop on Wednesday. He can only play 1B or DH. I don't know if he has any playing experience in Outfield in the Minor Leagues. With his previous foot and leg injuries, I don't think it would be wise to play him in the outfield at either corner positions. I believe we have enough players around to do that.

I thought so too, but Boone said that they were looking to sign him before DJ's injury. Just my opinion, but I think the Yankees are going to make a trade. Especially if the Anderson/Donaldson argument ticked off someone in the Yankees organization. Since the Yankees usually make their playing on the field do their talking.

Could also be wishful thinking, since I wanted the Yankees to trade Donaldson since they acquired him. Not that he's not a good player, but I would like to see DJ and Torres be the everyday 3Bman and 2Bman. Donaldson being part of some kind of trade would also relieve the Yankees of all or part of Donaldson's big contract. Such a trade might also bring back an upgrade in CF/LF.
