"The Yankees are casting a wider net for starters, and no surprise, they are in on Frankie Montas as well. Luis Castillo seems to be their first choice, however. Noah Syndergaard is running third."

I think the Yanks should get Syndergaard:

1. He has a 1.20 WHIP pitching in the AL

2. He's pitched in NY

3. He has a career 2.42 ERA in the postseason and has WS experience.

4. He's inexpensive

Syndergaard's past stats came from was when he was Thor.   He's lost a lot on his fastball and is a different pitcher now.

I'd go with Montas, who has a better WHIP, ERA+ and FIP (3.96 to 3.36).

His 1.21 WHIP is in 2022 with the Angels. Today.

Yeah and it's above his career average of 1.167, and above the 1.137 Montas has posted.

His FIP is a 3.96, that's pretty ordinary.   He's only striking out 7.2 per 9 innings.   His numbers are actually similar to Quintana's.

Montas is Javier Vazquez II. (As is Quintana.)

Yanks can get Syndergaard for a song.

That's because Thor has lost his hammer.   He's down to a Sears Craftsman these days, can't top 94 MPH.

Are the Yankees looking for someone to ease the workload of the pitching staff for the balance of the season, start a playoff game or even to replace Taillon in '23 ?

Their #1 target was Castillo, who checks off all of those boxes.   But what they can't control is what other teams offer for their trade targets, and what other GMs think of those offers compared to what the Yanks offer.

So yes, yes, and yes.   Someone to replace Severino's innings, and optimally someone you'd want to give the ball to in the post season.   If they're controlled in 2023 even better, although that is probably not as big of a concern as the other two needs.

That is why you see them connected to not only Montas now, but to Syndergaard and Quintana as well.   They want to try to be sure to get someone who helps them in at least one of those areas and they also don't want to pay too steep a price.

When you haven't developed a front line starter in years (Think Andy) then if one becomes available they have to take a hard look. That is why Soto was so alluring. Unfortunately good starters are costly in the trade market.
