Didi Gregorius released by Phillies. Should Yankees pounce?

The Phillies have released Didi Gregorius. He was batting .210 with a home run and 19 RBI this year and they needed a roster spot for Jean Segura. So not a huge surprise.

The natural next question: Would/should/could the Yankees look to bring him back?

A Gregorius reunion would have been a classic move in the George Steinbrenner era. But it’s hard to imagine they will have interest now.

Fans are down on Isiah Kiner-Falefa, but he’s having a much better season at the plate (albeit without much pop). And while his defense is an issue, Gregorius wouldn’t necessarily be an upgrade. Plus you figure top prospect Oswald Peraza deserves the first shot at unseating Kiner-Falefa if anyone gets one.

If Gregorius was able to play second and third, he could be depth/provide a push for Josh Donaldson. But he’s always been a shortstop. We’re going to say this one doesn’t add up. And with there being no waiver trades this season, guys like Gregorius may end up being in higher demand than usual. He’s only 32, so he isn’t necessarily done for sure. Someone will take a chance.

That said: If you’re the New York Boulders, you’ve got to get on the phone right now. Imagine Sir Didi and Robinson Cano in the middle of the infield and lineup taking the Frontier League by storm. Rockland County won’t know what hit it.

Do you think there is a chance that Didi's birth certificate is as legit as Bonds' home run record ?

Nooooooo......there is a reason why Didi was allowed to walk.

All the IKF stuff is ridiculous. Just as ridiculous, as when Didi first became a Yankee. People scorched Didi on this messageboard on almost everywhere else on the internet. Plus IKF is a stop gap to Anthony Volpe.

Didi is "probably" done.

No. Didi was already subpar defensively (-9 runs in DRS in about a half-season in 2019, his last year with the Yanks, and he's been a -10 runs a year fielder with the Philles), and his bat has collapsed the last two seasons.

In a good home run ballpark in Philly, he has just 1 HR this season in over 200 PA.

Didi was very good in his 5 years with the Yanks, one of the best trades in Cashman's long tenure as GM (Yanks traded Shane Greene and got Didi back as part of a 3 team deal.) Didi piled up 15 WAR in those 5 years, and for a very low cost, just $29 million in salary in the 5 seasons.)

32 years old, power has disappeared, defense is poor to say the least, basestealing all but gone.

I really liked Didi a lot when he was with the Yanks,. He was a really good guy and I was sorry they had to let him go just to see if Torres could handle short, but the Yankees got his 5 prime years. He's past his prime now, and unless something akin to a miracle happens, his career is pretty much over. Sadly, 1 hit shy of a career total of 1000, too.

He had two excellent seasons in 2017 and 2018, even got a downballot vote or two for MVP in those years. The JAWS system says he's the 143rd best shortstop in major league history, with almost 18 career bWAR. That's about right.

Yankees don't  need a middle infielder. What they need is a hot commodity...a steller pitcher...

If the Yanks go into September still with a double digit lead, it would be fun to give Didi a shot at that one hit he needs in a Yankee uniform.
