Earlier this week, the New York Post reported the right-hander will miss the beginning of the 2023 season with shoulder inflammation.
The New York Yankees acquired Montas and right-hander Lou Trivino from the Oakland A’s ahead of the 2022 trade deadline, sending four prospects out west: left-handers Ken Waldichuk and JP Sears, right-hander Luis Medina and infielder Cooper Bowman.
MLB Pipeline is out with its list of the top 10 lefty prospects in baseball. No. 3 is Waldichuk.
Waldichuk’s performance and stock slipped when he tried to throw harder as a junior at Saint Mary’s in 2019, which caused him to drop to the Yankees in the fifth round. New York helped him upgrade his fastball, slider and changeup before sending him to the Athletics in the Frankie Montas trade last August.
Waldichuk is the Athletics’ No. 2 prospect and No. 67 overall. The 25-year-old made his MLB debut last season with the A’s, going 2-2 with a 4.93 ERA in seven starts. In November, A’s general manager David Forst talked up Waldichuk to FanGraphs.
“We think Waldichuk has a chance to be a top-of-the rotation arm, and we certainly saw glimpses of that in the big leagues. With him, it’s the physicality, the fastball command, and the swing-and-miss he gets with three different pitches. I think Ken has a huge upside."

I think it was a big mistake trading W for Montas. Score one for Billy Beane--so far, at least. It's not as though we have a hundred LH pitchers to rely on in our bullpen anymore after also letting Luetge depart. Also, how long before the one LH reliever we have, Peralta, gets injured by being overused?

Getting Montas did not bother me nearly as much as trading away Montgomery. I am still ticked off about that deal.

Yankees are better off with Bader than Monty. Seeing Hicks in the OF had to stop and he did put on a show in the PS eventhough it was a small sample size. Let's see how he does in his walk year before he hits free agency.

I agree. We essentially went from Hicks and Monty to Bader and Rodon. I don't see anything at all there to complain about.
And while I sort of understood the trade at the time, I thought Waldichuk and Medina was a lot to give up. And the As have a knack of finishing off the development of minor league pitchers and turning them in to solid major leaguers. If they want your young pitching, they know something.

Ever wonder why so many guys have their best year when they are eligible to walk ? Look at the numbers Hikcs put up in 2018.

Exactly! I expect healthy MVP/CY Young seasons out of Bader and Severino
Hicks wasn't going to be a FA after 2018 but the Yankees extended him for some reason going against their own policy of not extending before they reach free agency.
Good thing they didn't extend Sanchez after the seasons he had in 2016 and 2017.
