Castillo vs Montas

Was reading an article that says the Reds wanted BOTH Dominguez AND Volpe in exchange for Castillo which is why Cashman pivoted to Montas.

So based solely on what Cashman knew on July 31st (and, therefore, ignoring for the moment that Castillo was a very good addition to the mariners and Montas was pretty much a disaster performance wise and physically), but keeping in mind how often it seems top Yankee prospects either flame out or the Yankees hold on to them until their value drops significantly -

Would you have made that trade: Dominguez and Volpe (and whatever other minor parts the Reds might have wanted) for Castillo?

I would not have made that trade and am glad that Cash didn't. I have a really good feeling about Volpe. Everything I read talks about not only his ability but his intangibles and makeup. I think he's going to be a star and fans will fall in love with him. For whatever reason, I'm not as h igh on Dominguez. Not sure why, possibly because I think he has been over hyped. I might have been willing to part with him and a lesser prospect for Castillo. In hindsight, I wish we would have stood pat and brought up Sears or Waldichuk to round out the rotation last year.

The consensus seems to be that the ceiling for Sears or Waldichuk is probably a #4 or #3. Hindsight now suggests the ceiling for Montas may be the 60 day IL.

Live in the Bay Area so I get some of the local sports news. A's love Waldichuk and they think he might become a top of the rotation arm. I guess time will tell.

Bg to efore they signed Judge I agreed the trade for Judge. If they had already signed Judge to that deal before the deadline i would have made the trade for Castillo. All hindsight but I believe the Yankees need to win a championship in the next 2 or 3 years and then go for a major rebuild after that. Guys like Castillo would help them do that

I would have made the deal for Castillo last August at the cost of Dominguez and Volpe.  There were only two pitchers I wanted back then...Castillo and Ohtaini. I would have sent Volpe and Dominguez for Castillo and have sent the entire farm system for Ohtani.  I hope Montas and Rodon prove me wrong but I don't see them as talents in the same tier as Castillo and Ohtaini.

I wouldn't have made that trade with the Reds. I also wouldn't have traded both Medina and Waldichuk.

Dominguez and Volpe was too high an ask. JD and a couple of other less rated prospects, maybe yes. Volpe in particular was too much, as Castillo only had a year of control beyond the balance of 2022.

However, the very team-friendly contarct Castillo took from the Mariners was a bit stunning. I don't believe the Yankees would have gotten such a deal from him if he was traded to the Yanks.
