Gleyber needs to be traded as his value is high. He had a good 2019 in a juiced ball year and than really tailed off in 2020 and 2021. He will be a FA after 2025 I believe. Rather trade a guy a year early than hold onto him a year too late and get nothing for him (Frazier, Andujar, Adams, Garcia etc.) Yankees have guys like Peraza and Volpe that are coming up while guys like Sweeney and Arias are continue to develop.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To what do you attribute his 24 HRs last year?
Trading a player who might command a big FA contract is what small market teams do.
Are the Red Sox a small market team? They traded a much better player in Betts. Small market teams would have watched Judge leave, would never have a guy like Cole and would have had no shot at Rodon. The issue is an abundance of IF talent in the org and a need for an OF. Plus Hal seems to not want to cross the final tax threshold (and just being at that level is proof they're not a "small market" team). If someone like Cabrera can give you comparable production to Gleyber at the league minimum, then why overpay and have a good player sitting? And why not free up Gleyber's money for a position of need? Gleyber also had a horrible 2020, and while it was a shortened season, he had conditioning problems which can be a red flag that the player won't age well. No such issues exist for Cabrera/Peraza/Volpe.
One of the biggest differences between playing 2nd and 3rd is the distance you are from the batter. Not every guy is comfortable being that close to a Giancarlo Stanton or Aaron Judge who hits a ball 115 mph. Not every player is comfortable with that. As fans, we think we can move these guys as if they were toy soldiers. The Yankees considered using Torres at 3rd from the day they got him. I wonder if a reason he is not there concerns his comfort level playing there ?
I understand some of the frustration with Glybers brain farts but I don't understand the dislike and desire to trade someone who is arguably the second best bat on the Yankees.
newin,
I am with you on Gleyber. While his lapses are very frustrating, he is one of the best offensive second basemen in baseball. If they ere to trade him, who woudl replace his production in the lineup?
You'd hopefully deal him in a package for a LH hitting OF and then you have a bunch of potential replacements. A healthy DJLM is better offensively than Gleyber. Guys like Cabrera and Volpe could also both be as good or better, and Cabrera switch hits and is a better LH hitter. Would you rather have Gleyber and Hicks, or Volpe and Thomas for example? Or even Volpe and Cabrera in LF, and Crochet added to the pitching staff?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I don't believe Gleyber has been offered or declined the opportunity to play 3B. Yanks currently have DJ to handle the position and are stuck with Donaldson for another year. As I said earlier, Gio nailed that position down prior to the Donaldson deal, which was done primarily to shed Sanchez. As dumb as that was, it's probable Yanks felt Donaldson would do an adequate job holding the position down and provide some offensive pop for 2 years while Peraza/Volpe matured, with the prospect of moving Gleyber to 3B at that time. If he's not traded that's what I fully expect to happen.

It is over. I am not going to complain about "that deal". I am more interested in the comfort level of the guy and the potential position change. I think that matters.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And I'm not at all concerned with Gleyber's "comfort level" at 3B...as I strongly doubt he is.
- First off, Volpe is closer to being MLB ready than Pereira - Maybe ... Yankees need a LFer more than they need a 2nd baseman right now
- They tried to trade Torres to the Marlins for Lopez - The Marlins waanted Gleyber and the Yankees said no Thanks
- The Yankees aren't going to have a 15 million dollar player on their bench - DJ is going to play 3rd, 1st, 2nd and DH ... If he is healthy
- In my opinion 3B will be DJ's in 2024 - DJ will be 36 in '24 and has never started more than 47 games at 3rd base in a season and that was as an injury fill-in. DJ will never be a full time 3rd baseman at this point in his career.
Yeah, the Yankees need a LFer more than a 2Bman, that's why Torres is the most likely to get traded, for the reasons already mentioned.
The Marlins also wanted Peraza along with Torres in the trade for Lopez. Remember, Hal said that Peraza and Volpe will get long looks in Spring Training. That doesn't sound like a vote of confidence that they will re-sign Torres when his contract is up.
DJ has played 1416.2 innings at 3B. Besides, 3B is a less demanding position than 2B. And the season where your mentioned DJ playing 47 games at 3B you failed to mention that same season DJ won a Gold Glove.
DJ will be 36 in the middle of the 2024 season, so what? He could be keeping 3B warm for Sweeney if he's MLB ready in a couple of years. Arias might be better than them all, but he might only be in Double A by then.
3B is a less demanding position than 2B - Now you are just being silly DJ playing 47 games at 3B you failed to mention that same season DJ won a Gold Glove - DJ never won a gold glove for 3rd base
It shouldn't be silly to anyone that actually played the game.
DJ actually won 2 gold Gloves in seasons where he played part of those seasons at 3B.
SS is the harderst position to play in the infield...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Actually, an argument can be made that in many respects 2B is more difficult.
Without a doubt the corner infield positions are easier to play than the middle infield positions.

It's not a bad idea, but other than on this message board, I haven't heard the Yankees having any plans to move Torres to 3B.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Haven't seen Yanks make a definitive statement re moving Gleyber to 3B, and wouldn't expect them to. But, just as many talent evaluators project Volpe moving to 2B, many pegged prospect Gleyber to eventually move to 3B due to his strong arm, relative lack of range and thickening lower body. I believe he'd be there today if Yanks hadn't found a pleasant surprise in Urshela.
I like the idea of Torres playing 3B. But one thing to keep in mind is that the last time the Yankees moved Torres off 2B full time, he had a bad season in the field and at the plate. I can't speak for the Yankees, but that might make them shy away from moving Torres off 2B a second time.
SS is the harderst position to play in the infield and Gleyber doesnt have the quickness to play it.
3rd base is a lot less cerebral but requires a good arm which Gleyber has. Whether he can make the transition or not I dont know ... but if not maybe Volpe can. We will see soon
Yes I know that SS is the harderst position to play in the infield, followed by 2B.
