Gleyber needs to be traded as his value is high. He had a good 2019 in a juiced ball year and than really tailed off in 2020 and 2021. He will be a FA after 2025 I believe. Rather trade a guy a year early than hold onto him a year too late and get nothing for him (Frazier, Andujar, Adams, Garcia etc.) Yankees have guys like Peraza and Volpe that are coming up while guys like Sweeney and Arias are continue to develop.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To what do you attribute his 24 HRs last year? Trading a player who might command a big FA contract is what small market teams do.
Anyone can have a good year but he is not consistent. Jogging to 1B and mental lapses won't go away and Boone won't bench him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anyone can have an off year, as Gleyber did in '21...his only "off" year out of 4. He is a prototypical 3B, who most teams would love to have. If he performs well enough over the next 2 years to command a big contract as a FA...that's a good thing.
3B? He didn't have an arm for SS. What makes you think he has one for 3B? He also had crappy year in 2020. He is inconsistent to say the least.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ He's got a cannon arm. Throw out any 2020 stats for any player.
He might have a cannon but he probably doesn't know where it will end up. I watched Strawberry make throws from RF with the Mets back in the day and he had a cannon as well. He had no clue where it ended up either.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The throw from 3B is much different than SS. Has he had any problems throwing from 2B? Yankees Scouting Report - Gleyber Torres Defense (60) – Torres has tremendous hands at the position. He has seen his range decline some as he thickened in his lower half, but he still has such good hands that he projects as a shortstop. However, with his frame able to handle more weight well and his hands being his best defensive tool, it could make sense for Torres to move to third at some point. Arm (60) – This could be a touch low. I only put Torres at a 60 due to him having plus- to plus-plus arm strength but struggling at times to get his feet right under him, especially during cutoffs. Torres could be a solid third baseman with his arm strength. I do think his arm plays well at short to help him remain at the position for at least the short term. www.foxsports.com/stories/mlb/new-york-y...

It's not a bad idea, but other than on this message board, I haven't heard the Yankees having any plans to move Torres to 3B.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Haven't seen Yanks make a definitive statement re moving Gleyber to 3B, and wouldn't expect them to. But, just as many talent evaluators project Volpe moving to 2B, many pegged prospect Gleyber to eventually move to 3B due to his strong arm, relative lack of range and thickening lower body. I believe he'd be there today if Yanks hadn't found a pleasant surprise in Urshela.
Was it finding Urshela or trading for Donalson that kep Torres off third ?
Do you watch the games or just make weird comments ... Gleyber came up as a 2nd baseman and was moved to SS when Didi was injured. He was RoY-3 - behind Andujar RoY-2 (who was the 3rd baseman) and some nobody named Ohtani (RoY-1)
When the Yankees acquired Gleyber Torres in July of 2016 he had never played anywhere other than SS. See: www.mlb.com/news/yankees-acquire-gleyber...
He only played 76 innings at 2nd base in the minor leagues in 2017. I am not sure why. There was always discussion of him going to 3rd and that got blocked when the Yankees acquired Donaldson.
Nothing got blocked ... They like Gleyber at 2nd and he's versitile enough to play SS or 3RD ... why is that so hard to understand.
He has had no problems at 2B because it is a much shorter throw. Maybe it is in his head or bad footwork but he was horrible at SS and I guess those scouting reports were a swing and a miss with the "Projects as a SS" I would like to see a more current scouting report than the one from June 2017.
2018 - 24 hrs in 123 games 2022 - 24 hrs in 140 Games Gleyber has 30 HR potential in any full season
One of the biggest differences between playing 2nd and 3rd is the distance you are from the batter. Not every guy is comfortable being that close to a Giancarlo Stanton or Aaron Judge who hits a ball 115 mph. Not every player is comfortable with that. As fans, we think we can move these guys as if they were toy soldiers. The Yankees considered using Torres at 3rd from the day they got him. I wonder if a reason he is not there concerns his comfort level playing there ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I don't believe Gleyber has been offered or declined the opportunity to play 3B. Yanks currently have DJ to handle the position and are stuck with Donaldson for another year. As I said earlier, Gio nailed that position down prior to the Donaldson deal, which was done primarily to shed Sanchez. As dumb as that was, it's probable Yanks felt Donaldson would do an adequate job holding the position down and provide some offensive pop for 2 years while Peraza/Volpe matured, with the prospect of moving Gleyber to 3B at that time. If he's not traded that's what I fully expect to happen.
It is over. I am not going to complain about "that deal". I am more interested in the comfort level of the guy and the potential position change. I think that matters.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And I'm not at all concerned with Gleyber's "comfort level" at 3B...as I strongly doubt he is.
I hope you are right. I still have his last move and September of '21 in my mind.
You'd like to see a more current report as to whether he still has plus- to plus-plus arm strength? His throws from 2B often came from short RF with the shift on. Any problems there?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You seem to be looking for reasons as to why Gleyber is not at 3B now. I gave you my take, and have absolutely no doubt Gleyber would be most comfortable at 3B.

Are the Red Sox a small market team? They traded a much better player in Betts.
Small market teams would have watched Judge leave, would never have a guy like Cole and would have had no shot at Rodon.
The issue is an abundance of IF talent in the org and a need for an OF. Plus Hal seems to not want to cross the final tax threshold (and just being at that level is proof they're not a "small market" team).
If someone like Cabrera can give you comparable production to Gleyber at the league minimum, then why overpay and have a good player sitting? And why not free up Gleyber's money for a position of need?
Gleyber also had a horrible 2020, and while it was a shortened season, he had conditioning problems which can be a red flag that the player won't age well. No such issues exist for Cabrera/Peraza/Volpe.
If someone like Cabrera can give you comparable production to Gleyber? WTH are you talking about? When did that happen??? Gleyber also had a horrible 2020, and while it was a shortened season, he had conditioning problems - He had covid dumbazz ... he batted .161 with a .500 ops over his 1st 17 games He batted .300 with a .873 ops over his final 25 games

I understand some of the frustration with Glybers brain farts but I don't understand the dislike and desire to trade someone who is arguably the second best bat on the Yankees.
newin,
I am with you on Gleyber. While his lapses are very frustrating, he is one of the best offensive second basemen in baseball. If they ere to trade him, who woudl replace his production in the lineup?
You'd hopefully deal him in a package for a LH hitting OF and then you have a bunch of potential replacements. A healthy DJLM is better offensively than Gleyber. Guys like Cabrera and Volpe could also both be as good or better, and Cabrera switch hits and is a better LH hitter.
Would you rather have Gleyber and Hicks, or Volpe and Thomas for example? Or even Volpe and Cabrera in LF, and Crochet added to the pitching staff?
DJL - is a very valuable utilty player , 1B , 2B , 3B and DH ... If he is healthy and if age is not catching up to him. Cabrerra can NOT be as good or better than Gleyber either as a LH or RH. Cabrera batted .238 vs RH Pitching ... That was befoe he got figured out in the playoffs and went 2 for 28 !!! Volpe - If he makes the team out of Spring training changes everything. However he's only played 22 games in AAA and hasnt proven that he can hit AAA pitching yet. Hes also only played 2 games at 2nd Base and 3 Games at 3rd in his minor league career so not even sure at this point what position he will likely play in the MLB ... he's not considered a great fielder Who is Thomas ??? I would take Hicks and Gleyber over Cabrera and Volpe right now. Yankes would end up with Peraza, Volpe , Cabrera and Trevino at the bottom of the lineup - Essential 3 rookie / unproven players and a catcher with a career ops .649 .
